KIA concludes. Michael Van Patrick's clone is going
after all those on his list, and the last name is
Michael Van Patrick. Can the recruits stop him? And
who's that? The Original New Warriors? HELL YEAH!
Commentary:
I never thought I would say these words outloud, but
Justice (Vance Astrovik) is a badass. Carry on.
SPOILERS ABOUND WITHIN, SO BEWARE!
The recruits are facing the wrath of KIA who has
taken down nearly every other major threat at Camp
Hammond, and he's killed what could be scores of
people (at the least Thor Girl, Van from the Scarlet
Spiders, and possibly Trauma?). He's taken everyone
else down, and it's up to the Old New Warriors and
the recruits (Hardball, Komodo, Cloud 9, Michael and
Patrick, and possibly the real MVP) to take him
down.

Okay, there is one part of this issue that I
actually screamed out YES! while reading and pumped
my fist. When the kids go to War Machine and tell
him they need to get to Tennessee and need him to
blow up the portal, he tells the soldiers to keep
Prison 42 on lockdown and leave him to KIA by
himself. Then he amps up as War Machine and busts
out a massive proton chest cannon, and I about lost
it. Jim Rhodes is back baby.
But...
They finally revealed why he hasn't taken his mask
off since he's been there. He takes his faceplate
off for a second and reveals what appears to be a
badly misshapen face, what looks like part
Terminator-part Jim Rhodes as if something horribly
bad happened to him and he is no longer Jim Rhodes.
I was saddened. My heart broken. The pissed off Iron
Man was only now War Machine. Could he ever take the
suit off? Questions questions questions.
Anyhoo, he gets trounced quickly by KIA but not
killed. The kids make it to MVP. And they manage to
take down KIA with the help of the Mighty Avengers
and Iron Man actually manages to not come off as a
complete idiot for once.
This series continues to amaze me. With the
astonishing linework of Stefano Caselli and the
wonderful colors of Daniele Rudoni and especially
the splendid writing of Gage and Slott, this book is
at the top of the stack all the time. From the
anything goes and anyone could be the next recruit
and the next person killed in action (even Geldoff,
Bendis creation from the Ultimate Universe, showed
up in this series). Everyone has spot on
characterization. The Scarlet Spiders lose Van, and
immediately, they're 3-for-1 speech pattern is
completely disjointed with him being gone.
Everything is done for a reason. Komodo is poisoned
and has to have her legs amputated (which happened
to her as a human, which is why she is never out of
her Komodo form) and Hardball promises he'll let
nothing bad happen to her.
The characters all come across as real people. Every
single one. Even Gyrich and all the damn dirty
Skrulls that are bound to be within the ranks of the
book.
I can only keep reading.
And the final page, the twist ending: Slapstick sure
is a son of a bitch.
