The
majority of the issue is set in a courtroom-esque
setting. A hearing regarding the actions during
the KIA story. Did Henry Gyrich have any
information, any part in the problems that
befell the camp? Did Iron Man?
A lot of posturing aside, this is one of the
better mainstream Marvel comics going. There is
always a lot going on. Everybody gathers to
discuss who is culpable for what happened to the
recruits and whose fault the clones are. The
Scarlet Spiders are missing a brother, and now
Michael Van Patrick wants to join Counter Force
(made up of the old New Warriors, which is
pretty cool even though it's a really stupid
name).
Anyways, Crusader had his hand put back on by
new physician Physique and he has no idea,
still, that Crusader is a Skrull. He finds a way
to hide his skrully attributes through the use
of the Free Dumb Ring he has on his hand (please
tell me someone got that joke, Robert Kirkman
are you out there?). Constrictor got new hands
(AWESOME) and has no use for his adamantium
coils as his hands can pretty much do the same
thing and Nighthawk gets to dole out purple
hearts.
All the while, Gyrich is getting his ass handed
to him in the conference room as he and Iron Man
have a verbal showdown about who knows people
who are higher-up, leading Gyrich to be booted
out and Iron Man deciding to take a more active
role in the Initiative.
And then, the graduates get new assignments and
newer, flashier costumes. Triathlon is the new
3-D Man. Ultra-Girl wears the old Ms. Marvel
costume. Hardball looks kinda like Invincible.
And Cloud-9 is leading a team of her own, The
Freedom Force (suck it Mystique). And Thor Girl
keeps her same old costume (HA!).
The best thing to be said about this comic is
the writers know each and every character and
give them all really awesome voices. Ant-Man is
a jerk. Taskmaster is a bigger jerk. They both
comment on Dragon Lord's ashes and mock the dead
man's family, and you can't help but laugh. The
Scarlet Spiders and MVP all are slowly becoming
distinct, even though they all might be clones
(don't they ever realize that clones are bad?).
We are again teased by what may have happened to
Rhodey, but we still haven't gotten a definitive
answer to what screwed him up big-time.
My only major beef: Steve Uy is a great artist,
but Stefano Caselli was missed. And looking at
future solicitations, he might not be coming
back any time soon. I can only hope that he is
resting. But, Steve Uy is a good replacement.
His art is slightly more anime-tinged and
slightly more cartoony, but even then, it works
for the younger characters and the action
pieces. Those are his strong suits. But this
book has a lot of quiet moments, which he is not
as suited for. Either way, bring on the
Initiative.
Bring on the Skrullmageddon!!!!
