Skrullocalypse Tie-in GB Style. Tea and Crumpets and ass-beatings please. And bring me the Hot Knives from Pete Wisdom while you're at it. Skrullmageddon invades the Brits hard and a war has started. For reals.

Commentary:
Just barely edged out two other books for book of the week. It was a close one this week, a real scorcher, but this book took the cake.

Paul Cornell was born to write British superheroes (seriously, he's British). And thank God this means the terrible Excalibur book put on by Claremont is dead and buried and this will be our new Brit-super-fix. Because this is an honest to Yahweh balls-to-the-wall super-comic. Paul Cornell does equal parts deconstruction of the British Captain Britain (huh?) and equal parts kick-ass by throwing him and various other characters into the mix with the Skrull-takeover.

We see Defenders-styled Skrull (part Ghost Rider, part Angel, part Iceman, part god knows who else) and Marvel Monsters-styled Skrull (Morbius, Werewolf By Night, Dracula to name a few) as well as original Avengers Skrull (with Fat Iron Man costume and part Hulk-Skrull), and these were just all kinds of fun to see. Throw them together with Spitfire, Skrull John (of the Skrull Beatles), Pete Wisdom (still one of my all-time favorites for having the badass hot blade finger knives and being such an all-out pimp when he was part of Excalibur when Warren Ellis wrote it right on into Ellis' X-Force), and the Black Knight (with helmet and leather jacket. He's on vacation.)

This is another great team and in the same sense of the original Avengers, Cornell has them come together in a similar manner. They are faced with dire odds and the world could potentially end, and while having initially a team of just Skrull John, Capt. Britain, Alistaire Stewart (how cool is it that he's back?), and Pete, they get thrown together with all of MI13.

TEA AND SPOILERS TO COST A QUID

Spitfire was part of the Invaders and is the super-fast, super-vampiry chick whose kid became the new Baron Blood in the New Invaders series (short-lived but awesome). She's back baby. But no Union Jack (dammit). Pete Wisdom keeps getting these weird messages telling him a hero will be reborn and stuff like that, and he has to deliver the new heroes to their battle.

As I mentioned, Black Knight is on vacation in England and happens upon the Skrullvention and takes part in the ass-whooping against the Skrulls and there meets Faiza, who is supposed to be a part of the group in upcoming issues. Skrulls attack, she's a doctor, and she's helping people in the city while talking with Black Knight.

And Cornell has done his homework. We actually get mention of the Ebony Blade and how evil it truly is. And we get jokes out of Black Knight in the sense that maybe he's having a mid-life crisis and that's why he's still doing what he's doing. We actually see a bit of his humanity as well as Capt. Britain's, right before he goes off into Otherworld to protect the gateway from the Skrull-bomb which is going to destroy it. The whole premise of this issue was to protect it from the Skrulls or so they thought, and instead, The Skrulls wanted to destroy it.

And Boom! Captain Britain takes one for the Universe.

Leonard Kirk, as always, does a spectacular job. This is the first ongoing series spinning off from Skrullalypto and it is a fine start. Cornell and Kirk are a very strong team for this. One that takes utter pleasure in showing the massive outbursts of power and destruction, as well as the small character moments that Marvel is so dedicated to. This is the book to beat. If the rest of the Skrull of Days is like this, count me impressed.
