I always say if you’re going to do a short film, then you’d better make
damn sure you soak up every minute for storytelling. Peter Podgursky
manages to squeeze in an entire story with character focus in eleven
minutes, and every minute is worth watch for any fan of horror comedies.
“Cheerbleeders” is the story of Penny and Devon, high school outcasts
who accidentally release the spirit of an Greek god. Soon enough Devon
becomes very popular after a prank and it’s up to Penny to discover why.
But when the blood starts to pour from Devon’s rising popularity, Penny
takes it upon herself to put a stop to him or endure a blood orgy. I
went in to Podgursky’s film with the sheer optimism that he could
conduct a damn good horror comedy and it comes as no shocker that I had
fun watching it.

The production value is high
with much of the scenery confined to a school where the
carnage is inflicted and director Peter manages to squeeze
some impressive editing as well. A mixture of “Evil Dead”
and a Guy Ritchie film, “Cheerbleeders” just seeks to
entertain and never acts on the pretension that it’s
highbrow fare. But it also never tries to resort to toilet
humor to win the audience over. The pacing is very tight
with a constantly in motion narrative that could easily fall
in to disaster and thankfully never does. |

For anyone looking for their horror chops
Podgursky also pulls off some convincing gore and trust me when I say
that the gore definitely flies with satisfaction.
The casting is also high
point with Wyatt Fenner acing his character as a geek who transforms in
to a sex god among the cheerleaders soon becoming the megalomaniacal
villain ad zeal. Laurel Vail is also a scene stealer as the wise Penny
who takes pride in being an outcast and takes her love for mythology one
step too far causing great problems for everyone around her.
“Cheerbleeders” is simply a really good display of Podgursky’s directing
prowess and it has potential to be something bigger. As it stands the
movie is just kick ass, and I want to see what else the director can
pull off on film.
If this is why
Podgursky can do with eleven minutes I look forward to seeing what he
can pull off with a feature film some day. He definitely has the chops,
knows his elements and can direct, he just needs more good material.
“Cheerbleeders” is kick ass, a movie with definite replay value. You
can’t say that about indies most of the time.
