DAREDEVIL: BLOOD OF THE TARANTULA
Momar Van Der Camp

Published by Marvel Comics
Written by Ande Parks
Art by Chris Samnee

Black Tarantula is back in NYC and taking names. Like a modern day Robin Hood. But...complications arise when the old gang comes to town and only DD can help him.

Commentary:
This is going to be my book of the week, and it had some really strong competition. Let's start with this: I've met Ande Parks multiple times and he is an amazing writing talent, inking talent, and all-around nice guy (same with his partner in crime Phil Hester). I recently had the chance to meet Chris Samnee at a con and feel like the two mesh perfectly together (as witnessed by the great graphic novel Capote in Kansas). And I am a fan of Chris' for life now after seeing his amazing headshot of Havok, the old Neal Adams Havok with the wing-dings. But I digress...

Give these two a Tarantula comic.

An ongoing monthly featuring Carlos LaMuerto and I would read it. I would gladly plunk down any amount of money for this book about the supernatural anti-hero Robin Hood from the barrio.

He is a great character. Pretty much created as a throwaway villain in the 90s for Spider-man to whoop on, Brubaker made Carlos a more down to earth street level character. Sure he has healing powers and is fricking super-strong, but he still fits in with this generation's gritty crime saga that is Daredevil.

And Samnee and Parks fit really really well into that mold.

Tarantula is cleaning up the streets. Taking out drug dealers dealing in his part of NYC and bringing them to a very ferocious justice that Foggy Nelson doesn't agree with but Matt Murdock is having trouble saying he doesn't deserve to be doing what he's doing.

Tarantula is getting the job done. He isn't killing anybody. He isn't massively laying waste to a group of one hundred people like Frank Castle would, he is just very brutal in dealing out punishment.

And the way the character moves is just immaculate. Parks has made him into the modern-day Robin Hood character. He does what he must to protect those he cares about, steals from the rich, gives to the poor. and to keep up appearances and to stay in his barrio, he pays off cops. He pays for the luxury to protect the people he cares about. He is debonair and a bruiser at the same time. He is equal parts Wolverine and Daredevil, and man is he all kinds of cool.

And Samnee just draws him so well. Hell, he draws everything so well. His characterization, the faces, the responses to the actions and reactions of other characters are spot-on. There are two instances in particular featuring Tarantula (more really, but two almost in a row worth mentioning) and both are quiet moments. Carlos is taking money to a local church to help its patrons and is scolded for arriving bloody on the steps of the church. He takes his mask off, and his face is equal parts embarassed and there is a glimmer of a child being reprimanded by a parent. Then, he is on the roof, hand out holding what looks like cocaine, and ever so delicately blowing it into the wind to disperse throughout the air so it can't harm anyone. These moments are perfect examples of the strengths of Chris Samnee, and perfect examples of why he deserves a monthly book.

I will go so far as to say he doesn't even have to hit a monthly deadline. And I hate late artists. I would still follow a Black Tarantula written by Parks with art by Samnee.

The story itself is intrigue: Carlos' family and gang (his two families) appear to be in town looking to get revenge on him, and the gang is using his wife and son as bait. We learn about his powers, and one of his cousins is there to get those powers through a blood-letting. Will Carlos let him? Hell no.

Like I said, he is an elegant bruiser, and his actions are starting to rub off on DD during the story. Just wait until you see Carlos set on fire and "supposedly" killed. Wait until he comes back to wreak havoc on his cousin for using look-alikes to lure him into battle. It's a real doozy of an ending.

But it feels so right. Definitely my book of the week. Do yourself a favor and pick it up. If you like Daredevil, gang wars, or just plain old good comics, this is it people. PICK IT UP!!
