This is an interesting
little movie. I remember reading about "Dark Wolf" in Fangoria years ago
and immediately running out and renting it. The plot basically goes like
this (try to follow along, it's hard enough to follow in the movie):
Kane Hodder is the Dark Wolf, the black prince of Werewolves, and he has
come to mate with a purebred; namely the clueless blonde hottie Josie (Samaire
Armstrong). A homeless woman named Mary is a "Protector" who watches
over Josie and gives information about the Dark Wolf to Steve (Ryan
Alosio) a cop who is given the task of protecting Josie after Mary is
killed by the Dark Wolf. Mary's Werewolf legend book (I call it the
Wolfronomicon) ends up in the hands of Josie's clueless friends... are
you still paying attention?

Let me just
say this and you'll get the idea: Steve has to fight Dark
Wolf and protect Josie from him while she herself is turning
into a She-Wolf, and Dark Wolf can only be stopped by a
silver bullet in the eye. Whew! Believe it or not, there is
a lot more to it than that, but that's the
gist. Don't you just love an over-abundance of exposition?
Well, it's irritating, but the concept is pretty effective.
There is a ton of nudity in this flick. |

The first thing you
see in the movie are a nice pair of fake boobs at a strip club, and
it only gets better! The gore effects are quite good, and Samaire
gives a surprisingly good performance. Kane Hodder kicks ass as
usual. The naked-lesbian-she-wolf photo shoot scene is super hot!
Basically the photographer and his gay make-up artist find the
Wolfronomicon, and decide to have our two slutty models do an
interpretation of the illustrations. This movie kind of banks on the
sexy girls and nudity, and who's going to complain? The only problem
with the nudity here is that Kane Hodder is included, but it's
pretty brief thankfully.
A considerable
amount of the plot is dumb, confusing, and self contradictory. The
exposition is really annoying, there is so much to be explained
before the concept makes any sense, and the actors take a good
goddamned long time explaining it. The CGI is just offensive, Why do
filmmakers keep using that shitty excuse for special effects? It
never looks good, in any form of live action movie, ever! And the
CGI here is especially bad. The camerawork and editing are also
pretty cheese ball, with random montages of the Dark Wolf snorting,
shots of the moon, and "running" POV shots of the same three
sidewalks and alleys, over and over again. How is Josie a "purebred"
werewolf and not aware of it? That is never explained. Most of the
supporting characters are not likable whatsoever, and the acting is
pretty lousy with the exception of Samaire and the make-up artist
who was pretty amusing as an over the top fruit. I also was bummed
the we never got to see Samaire naked, despite being constantly
teased and that her character is obviously supposed to be naked in
the script, the best we get is a a CGI shot of her naked during her
transformation, what a let down.
"Dark Wolf" is a fun,
cheap, and sleazy little werewolf flick that tries to give the horror
fans everything they want, and does a pretty nice job of it. It's got a
few bits of surprisingly effective suspense, a hot lesbian photo shoot
scene, great gore effects, and a solid overall presentation. The girls
are hot, and the Werewolf is horny for them. Rent this one and have a
good time.
