THE DAY THE WORLD WENT AWAY (DIRECTOR'S CUT)

More Zombies huh? This thirteen minute free short film from CatchMeKillMe productions has what looks like the same old boring zombie crap that I personally have had more than enough of, but that is face value. A new father named Trent has the misfortune of being stuck in a post zombie apocalyptic city. Even his girlfriend Eve, has been taken by the zombie plague.

Now Trent must fight his way through the hordes of the undead to get his infant son Georgie to safety. Ian Messenger deserves a little bit of credit for trying something a little different here. He get's the point of the Zombie genre, no matter how incredibly lame and overdone it has gotten to be. He does a nice job with his acting for the most part, except he goes all cookie monster when he yells at people. The cinematography by Paul Hawkins isn't half bad for your basic approach, and I credit them for not buying into the "28 Days Later" style used so much today.

They did a fairly nice job getting to the point and making it clear. I can appreciate that Ian doesn't just want to tell a zombie story, he actually is trying to tell a story about paternal love, and the willingness to make sacrifices to protect those we care about. That's what I mean by getting the point. I got the message of this flick, and that is more then I can say for "Zombieland."

I'm sorry but whether it's High-budget, low budget, no-budget, or negative-budget; There simply is no excuse for two full minutes of zombies shuffling around and growling. The gore effects look like paper mache, which is pitiful no matter what your budget is. Lastly, and I really hope these guys learn this lesson: If you can't pull off a baseball bat to the noggin, try something else. There's no shame in avoiding it, or at least applying a technique like reverse motion, speeding up the film, inserting a blank frame, etc.

Ian Messenger did a respectable job. I have a soft spot for little cheapo shorts like this one. I think these guys have something good going here, and I look forward to seeing more from them. My advice: enough of the zombies, try something new. I would really like to see these guys take on a fresh concept. I think they could do something very interesting.  For
a movie that shares it's title with a great Nine Inch Nails song; They could have made more sense of the title. They did, however give us a little something to see. It's free on youtube, so go check
it out!
