"That's the Lotus and
it can go from zero to "suck my dick" in three seconds."
The only
redeeming trait is what I’m sure Asylum hoped to lure their viewers by
and it’s Vaginamyte. I Loved Vaginamyte, and both Double Dee-struction
and Queen Bee were two of the sexiest women I’ve seen in an Asylum flick
since “The Hitchhiker.” And I enjoyed looking at their car “The Lotus.”
There's something very noble about "Death Racers" and it's this: "Death
Race" by Paul WS Anderson was just an adaptation of the video game
"Twisted Metal" pretending to be a remake. "Death Racers" doesn't
pretend. Its C grade trash taking off from "Twisted Metal" and it makes
no illusions about it. So for once, I have to give respect to The
Asylum. Sure it's a rip off of "Death Race 2000" where the writers even
prop the characters to call the big death race "Death Race" but Asylum
makes no bones about this movie and even includes the points system;
Anderson didn’t even have the balls for that. That doesn't make it good,
though. Granted, the poster art is magnificent, but "Death Racers" is a
flinging piece of crap, a sheer opportunity for schlock that fails big
time from minute one. Aside from paying considerable lip service and
basically deifying ICP for starring in this POS, "Death Racers" features
some of the usual horrible performances from the cast of usual suspects
with a format much like "Death Race."

The movie plays much like a low
budget video game where each set of characters are
introduced with character profiles and their cars, all of
whom are moderated by two of the lamest news casters I've
ever heard. The interplay is terrible, and it's an utterly
awkward series of play by play that writer Andrew Helm can
not save in spite of the potentially cool premise. Director
Roy Knyrim’s (The name rolls off the tongue) direction is
awkward if mediocre at times and he can never really decide
on what to do with this whole affair. |

Some times there are
real hints of innovation and then minutes later it’s just bargain
basement bullshit that made the film seem as if it was made for a little
over a hundred bucks. Meanwhile there are zero protagonists that allow
us to connect to the proceedings on screen. Every character is nothing
but a one note concept that can’t go beyond ninety minutes and we never
grab any sort of essence in to their personality. Everyone feels like a
throwaway character thus the movie just gets very boring quickly. The
acting is on par with what you’ll usually find in an Asylum feature, but
the worst performance is by Robert Pike Daniel who is absolutely
horrible as Governor Black who runs the death race. “Death Racers”
doesn’t get my usual scorn since it’s not as bad as other Asylum wastes,
but it’s the sign of a crap movie when you have no one to root for in a
movie filled with flashy characters.
While it is a
flinging piece of swill, "Death Racers" has a lot of potential to be
great and that greatness shines through once or twice through the ninety
minute tedium, horrific acting and typical Asylum writing that opts for
Paul WS Anderson flash instead of breaking out on its own. But then
there are the cars, and... Vaginamyte, so... it's occasionally so bad
it's good. But still bad.
