"Drafted" has been in the process of being more
of a commentary on war, and a statement on our
society. In the bonds of war, we're all
basically equal and all generally conflicted. In
the bonds of war we lose many, and long to be
brought along for the carnage, and in the bonds
of war, there are many left behind questioning
their own role in the impending war. In Issue 6,
we set down on three characters who have been
left behind to fend for themselves in a
world that has so little people in it after
thousands of humans have been warped into the
alien ships in the sky to be drafted for duty.
Gabriel's little sister, who is inexplicably
left behind, is not only anxious to be warped
with her brother, but wonders what is wrong with
her that would prevent her to be called into
active duty.

In the Netherlands,
an older man is left to fend off against two
disgusting men who are intent on raping a young
girl against his protests, and the first lady of
the United States is running herself near a
nervous breakdown caring for refugees in the
White House. It's refreshing when a comic
reliant on alien warfare and apocalyptic battles
can settle down for a while to focus on the
human element of those longing for their
relatives called into the draft to fight the war
against their will, and how they have to cope as
well as those now training in the ships. As is
the norm with "Drafted," there are much
surprises to be had, including the first lady's
surprising confrontation with a sentient being
in response to her pleads, and Gerrit's own
conflict as a man whose cowardice may be his own
undoing but is forced to topple it when the
young girl Annika is in need of dire help. Mark
Powers writing is as tight and utterly elegant
as always, as he's focused more on demonstrating
humanity's grasps with this new alien force,
instead of attempting to inject style or
one-liners in the fold where it clearly doesn't
fit. "Drafted" is very thought provoking and
relies on a steady pace that keeps the
characterization rich, and the endless potential
fascinating. What the aliens have planned for
the next line of recruits will definitely keep
the reader waiting for issue 7. |
