DRAFTED #7
Felix Vasquez Jr.

One thing I’m not a fan of with “Drafted” is that the issue presents an array of art that never quite looks the same with every three pages. Sometimes the pages look slick, sometimes the art is blocky, and most times it struggles between anime style and realism. Granted, it’s still a beautiful book, but more consistency would work for the overall tone of the story. Issue number 7 presents the possibility that I frankly saw coming a mile away, but it also allows us to take a look at that common problem with being drafted in to a war. When you go to war, going home is never the same. And our characters are about to find that out as they come to grips with their new situation of serving to battle against an, as of yet, unknown foe that threatens humanity. What is threatening humanity? Why hasn’t anyone really questioned the species training them to fight in this war? Why is it our responsibility?

All is questioned in what is a firm and very entertaining science fiction epic that really challenges our thoughts on war and pacifism. I really hope the impending movie takes the intelligence of the story and launches on the intended commentary and symbolism, because “Drafted” constantly speaks on xenophobia, and being forced into a corner when your world is threatened. Would you serve if you discovered your world was under the threat of annihilation by an infinitely stronger force? Issue 7 is a lead in and a wonderful introduction of potential terrorists who are questioning the alien force working for humanity. I can’t wait for issue 8.
