What a fantastic movie, and I mean that with the utmost sincerity. I’ll
be honest, I’m a huge fan of Anderson, have been ever since seeing
Rushmore in theaters and going back and watching Bottle Rocket and
everything else he’s ever done since.
It just doesn’t fail to work out itself that I, indeed, loved this film
as much or more than lots of other films that have come out this year.
If you’ve read Felix’s review, I’ll try not to go over the exact same
things he did, but instead, will talk about the film technically and the
actors involved.
This is a comedy, a film that made me laugh a ton (more than most movies
this year, again). It was a rollicking good time, something we rarely
get in films anymore, from the opening cards and the opening song. It
just so happens to open with Fox and the Ballad of Davy Crockett, and
I’d be hard pressed to find a better way to start this film.

But let’s talk technically. This film is a wonder. It
doesn’t seem to have issues with the animation or the voice
acting. Everything falls into place perfectly. Just the
sheer insanity of the stop-motion puts so many other movies
to shame, movies with immense budgets and “glorious” special
effects, and this movie has more heart than any others
(read: Avatar).
The stop-motion itself is so good, so beautiful, that I
wanted to see it again. |

And again. And again. I want to see more movies done this way. Because
it just seems to have love written all over it. Not some high gloss
finish that loses all sense of reality or beauty. It’s just a film made
by people who love films for those who love films. It’s sheer beauty.
And the voice acting is top notch. I’ve become a huge fan of Clooney
because of the Coens and Soderbergh, but to put him in this role, he
just soars. I didn’t want to like Meryl Streep as I’m probably the
world’s biggest non-fan of her work, and here I was, watching this film,
and just enjoying her as well.
Nothing to be said about Schwartzman or Murray. I’m probably the world’s
biggest fan of Jason Schwartzman and will forever hold in my heart that
he should have played Spider-man, and as for Murray, come on, nothing
needs to be said about him. He’s just the best.
About the most fun I had at the movies this year, and will definitely
make it’s way on my top ten list once I finish that up. If you get a
chance, take it on this movie. The budget doesn’t have to be
extraordinary for a piece of beautiful cinema to make it’s way to us,
and that is exactly what we have here.
