The comedy stylings of
Looney Tunes most underrated Southern ne'er do well are collected in
fifteen new shorts, some of which have never been on DVD, and "Foghorn
Leghorn" is gladly still as hilarious and clever as he ever was. While
the character does indeed have his own slapdash physical antics that
make him apart of the Looney Tunes trio, Foghorn Leghorn was always
someone whose humor was something unique and subtle. Sure he is the
victim of explosions, and creates his own elaborate traps to outwit or
outsmart his nemesis, but his form of looking to the camera and breaking
the fourth wall always made for a bit more hilarity than that of Bugs or
Tweety. While the others seemed to be filling the audience in on their
plans, Foghorn Leghorn seemed like the old curmudgeon who could connect
with someone about their anger and general annoyance around them.

Foghorn
Leghorn's animated episodes were always so hilarious with
Foghorn either scheming or foiling other schemers. In some
episodes he is trying to woo the spinster Miss Prissy which
results in his disastrous encounter with her adopted baby
Henery Hawk who is intent on eating a chicken, and in
another episode he comes across her genius son who devises
brilliant ways to play simple games like Baseball and hide
and seek. Obviously he makes out before he begins to feel
cooped in. Get it? Chicken? Cooped. That's a joke

And of course when
he's not trying to scheme someone in to a meal or some shelter, he's
battling George the Dog in a truly obscure rivalry that spanned most of
the Leghorn episodes making for some raucous gags and slapstick that
deserved much more attention. The Robert McKimson character is still
crisp to this day and he makes for some fantastic comedy that is much
more unique than what you'll find with Tweety or Daffy. I won't argue
that he's better, but he's different, and sometimes that's what I want.
The DVD comes with no extras, but the episodes are restored and in
excellent quality for fans of the slick old rooster that Termite Terrace
birthed.
Foghorn Leghorn still
supplies some hilarious and genius Southern antics with battles
involving sly foxes, hungry Chicken hawks, ingenious roosters, and
rascally old backyard dawgs. For folks interested in some chuckles, this
is a fun set, but don't expect any extras to go with it. Sorry
collectors.
