I
don't review that one only because every month
would be the same. I love it I love it I love
it. And this book is slowly becoming that exact
same sense. But since it's firmly entrenched in
the Marvel Universe, please forgive my posturing
when I say:
This is the best book Marvel produces. Hands
down. Sorry X-Force.
It's amazing. To see a character that you've
always loved be treated with respect FINALLY
that he deserves. To be given a writer and
artist who understand the complexities of doing
a book that needs to be firmly entrenched in
horror and grindhouse and just cranking it all
up is what everybody's favorite comic character
deserves. Even if your favorite comic character
is Revanche or someone no one else likes, they
all deserve the same respect these creators have
shown the Ghost Rider.
And let's see how they do that.
The new Caretaker is a woman named Sara who is a
nun. And when Johnny disrobes in the middle of
the frozen wasteland to get warm, she turns her
eyes and acts like a regular nun would act.
She's perfect. Not overtly sexual. Not overtly
asexual. She just deals with it.
Johnny goes on the offensive this time to stop
Danny from doing something terrible, but he is
too late. Danny is jumping all over the world,
attacking the other Spirits of Vengeance, and we
get a great taste of what's in store. The
Tibetan man on the horse, who gets laughed at by
Chinese military men before burning them down to
ash, is awesome. Riding a flaming horse and
wearing tibetan robes, he looks like perfection.
Too bad he's put down so quickly by Danny.
But it all gives us a quick taste of what Aaron
has in store. When Anna mentions to Johnny that
he's blind for only thinking within the United
States, as if God wouldn't need Spirits of
Vengeance all over the world, we're left
wondering, who else could there be? Is there one
per continent? Per country? I CANNOT wait to
find out.
So the blow-out between Johnny and Danny doesn't
really completely happen here. They have words.
Small fisticuffs. And then Danny does the
impossible. He becomes his own Spirit of Zadkiel.
And it is an awesome splash page.
That's what this book does. Gets the characters
so right that I'm just excited every time I read
it. And the back-up Saga of Danny Ketch was a
nice touch. Something that saves you the trouble
of reading through Wikipedia pages to find the
info if you don't already know it (which I do
thoroughly know as I've been reading since the
first issue of Danny Ketch's book in the early
90s), but it was still a very nice refresher
course.
And this is the book from Marvel everyone should
be buying. Bar none. I love being bombastic in
my praise, but the way he talks to the fans in
the letters page is even pitch perfect. Having
people decide the perfect cast for an offbeat
Ghost Rider movie was awesome. Talking to the
fans like real people was great. Explaining in
one of the letters how fans used to always ask
when Danny was coming back and now are asking
when Vengeance is coming back (both questions I
myself have asked him), makes you feel like
you're part of the game.
And then his promises. Aaron told me Danny would
be back. Now in the letters page, he mentions
that Michael Badalino (VENGEANCE) will most
certainly be back. Maybe not as Vengeance, but
definitely as Mike. The only thing I hate about
this book? I wanted to do everything he's done
so far. And everything he will do I'm sure I
would have done. To a degree.
I can only hope that Marvel likes my idea for a
tie-in comic and runs with it. I would love to
play within this world.
