THE GRAN SCAM OF THINGS

One thing I love about director Leor Baum's short film is that it's such a combination of many different story themes that it's hard to pin down. It's a dramedy but it's also a funny slice of life. As well it's the story of an ant who becomes a giant without even realizing it. Gladys is a lonely old woman who lives alone with a friend in her battery operated robotic dust cleaner. Even though her friends insist the product is a scam, she talks to it like it's a dog, and confides in it about her life. After constantly being scammed in to buying cheap products, she takes it upon herself to learn how to use the internet at the reminder of her friends and upon checking her official email stumbles upon a spam message. Yes, it's a message from the Nigerian bank asking for her money to enlist her in the UK lottery.

Dreaming of making friends with a Nigerian banker and visiting his country prompts Gladys to go to the bank to send her information and little does she know she's stumbled in to one of the most widely investigated international scam rings in the country. "The Gran Scam of Things" while a bittersweet affair is also quite life assuring for the simple notion that sometimes people can affect the world in big ways thanks to striving for something better in their lives.

Anita Borcia completely dominates this movie with her fantastic portrayal of this naive and alienated woman whose high spirits and take charge attitude turns her from an average citizen in to a hero who helped others in the process of seeking self-worth. And what makes her even more of a hero is that she will never be aware of what she's done even after the FBI shows up to her door to reward her. "The Gran Scam of Things" is meant to call attention to the horrible scams preying on the elderly while also telling the story of an elderly woman who finds one last purpose in life before retreating back to her everyday routine of coffee, cookies, and bickering with her cleaning robot vac.

Director Leor Baum's dramedy is a fantastic short that shows what happens when karma and fate plays a hand in an average woman becoming a hero and helping others in the journey for happiness. "The Gran Scam of Things" is a beautifully acted crowd pleaser and a socially conscious one at that.
