FREAKAZOID! SEASON 2

Freaka Me! Freaka You!

An odd addition to the cast, Fan boy is probably one of the most underrated heroes of the animation genre ever. I mean, sure he's goofy. How many fan boys have glasses, are chubby, wear superhero shirts, and walk around quoting obscure movie trivia? Right...? Anyone...? Why are you looking at me? "Season 2" we meet Dexter Douglas, the inept nerd of Harry Connick Jr. high school up to his old shenanigans again. And he's still as prophetic as ever. Watch in the first ten minutes when Dexter remembers a vain date acceptance which he remembers thanks to his computer. "Freakazoid Season 2" is the year where the writers and crew completely let loose and brought us a series that was unusual, surreal, and absolutely hysterical. From Cosgrove inviting the audience for a yogurt (we love you Ed Asner), interrupting a battle scene to invite Freakazoid to odd amusement parks and tourist traps, we learn the meaning of the word toyetic, a hysterical spoof of COPS, a cameo from the Mask (likely asking Freakazoid to stop ripping him off) and Wacko Warner, and a hysterical rendition of "The Hokey Pokey." And you also have to appreciate Joe the narrator's attempts at acting throughout the season. "Freakazoid" is a series that deserved a better following even if it was derivative, primarily for the top notch voice work and hilarious off the wall comedy that only the smallest demographic of audiences will understand.

The demographic who likes to laugh without being treated like idiots and stuff. Actor Paul Rugg is about as excellent as he ever was in Freakazoid's shoes, while folks like Frank Welker and the immortal Maurice LaMarche manage to induce fits of giggles at every turn in recurring supporting performances. There is also my favorite episode of the entire series "The Island of Dr. Mystico" where Freakazoid and his friends (and--Leonard Maltin) are kidnapped by an evil doctor who threatens to turn them in to his evil ape soldiers. The entire episode is non-stop laughter and sharp asinine comedy that features one of the best escapes off an island--and Leonard Maltin. Freakazoid. I'm so happy that he's back I want to scream Aaaaah! It's just sad this is the final bow for the magnificently animated antics of this animaniac. Among the Extras there's "Liebeslied Fu Normadeus" about the crew's look back at the production of the second season and their ideas behind all of the random cameos in this season. There's a full season of commentaries... in five minutes, and a sample of Richard Stone's excellent score for the series.
