Hey
guys, you know I root for your team. I rooted for "The
Expendables" to win the box office, and loved almost all
of the big action pictures of the year, but let's face
it. In 2010 the women dominated Hollywood. Not just
Hollywood, the world! They pulled the most headlines,
made the most noise, and garnered the most attention!
Whether it was Jessica Alba not knowing when to shut her
yap, Helen Mirren showing she's still just as sexy as
any other young bomb shell out there, Julie Taymor's
releasing of "The Tempest" and her pursuit to complete
her Spider-Man musical come hell or high water--or
imminent death, Emma Watson's effort to disassociate
herself from Hermione with her short locks, Katy Perry's
controversial run in with Sesame Street, or Wonder
Woman's radical re-invention for the modern comic book
readers that grabbed headlines across the board, women
made waves, and surely enough 2010 was the year the
shone above the men. These are only a few women in
Hollywood who entertained, thrilled, and compelled us in
2010.

Ellen Wong
Edgar
Wright's "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World"
featured many notable gorgeous talented
actresses, and any one of them could have
been put in this list. But let's face it,
Ellen Wong is a veritable newcomer and
deserving of a rising star status. Mary
Elizabeth Winstead has a strong career
going, Alison Pill is a seasoned child
actress with a wonderful career on stage,
Mae Whitman is a seasoned stage and
television actress, and Anna Kendrick is
Oscar nominated. Ellen Wong however, while
playing the reject Knives Chau who pined
over Scott Pilgrim for most of the
production, took the cake as a woman
definitely in need of a big explosion in to
Hollywood, and it'd be a crime if she didn't
garner a huge career--or at least a notable
one--after Wright's casting of the young
Canadian Asian Actress who held her own
against an array of talented young actors,
and managed to draw the most laughs, grabbed
the most quotable lines, and ended up having
her moment in the spotlight by the time the
film ended. Many movie geeks were pining
over the girls of "Scott Pilgrim" all year,
but for our money, Wong is the woman who has
immense promise and deserves to be launched
in to a high profile career in film. In a
movie filled with such excellent young
performers, Wong rose above the material at
times, and it'd be a shame to see her fade
in to obscurity. She's much too gorgeous,
much too talented, and too damn funny to be
lost in the shuffle. Take note, Hollywood,
yet another fine actress is waiting in the
wings. Let's prevent restricting her to
action films and just cast her as yet
another actress who can prove herself. How
about it? |

Jennifer Lawrence
While
Lawrence is on the cusp of starring in the
newest "X-Men" film as the devilish
Mystique, she's more than proven her weight
as an actress in the much sought after
festival hit and bonafide masterpiece
"Winter's Bone." Garnering awards, and
praise across the board, Lawrence is
storming festivals with her latest dramatic
thriller and has dominated the likes of
Sundance, Gotham, and has been nominated for
Best Female Lead in the upcoming Independent
Spirit Awards along with her film "Winter's
Bone" that has completely ruled over most of
the nominations for the upcoming awards
ceremony. To top that, Lawrence is also
nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Lead
Actress, and there is a lot of buzz around
"Winter's Bone" being a heavy contender for
the Oscars next year. And you know what?
It's well deserved. Lawrence isn't just a
pretty face, she is also an excellent
actress who takes the character of Ree Dolly
and turns her in to an iconic female heroine
whose entire basis for survival is caring
for her family, and goes through heaven and
hell to save them. Lawrence, once slumming
it in television shows like "The Bill
Engvall Show," is a young woman who is
deserving of much more challenging roles,
and we're excited to see what she'll do with
Mystique when "X-Men: First Class" rolls in
to theaters.

The Women of "Black Swan":
Mila Kunis & Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman's track record in 2010 reads
like a laundry list--or a bucket list. We're
not sure yet. In 2010 she spent time
promoting her new film "Thor" commuting with
the geeks at Comicon, which premiered with a
trailer featuring the young actress in the
potential blockbuster alongside Chris
Hemsworth, she headlined the Darren
Aronofsky dramatic thriller "Black Swan," in
which she gave an incredible performance as
the torture Nina Sayers, she also premiered
"Your Highness" one of her first big
comedies coming out in 2011, is co-starring
in three big films next year, and just
announced that she's pregnant and is getting
married (breaking the hearts of thousands of
movie geeks including yours truly)! To the
choreographer for Black Swan!
Furthermore,
many expect her to take home a Best Actress
win at the Oscars next year! Natalie Portman
continues meeting expectations and going to
eleven. Co-Star Mila Kunis was no slouch
this year starring in the comedy "Date
Night" alongside James Franco, Tina Fey, and
Steve Carell, and held her own against
Natalie Portman in "Black Swan" playing the
unkempt and insanely sexy Lily who helps the
main character Nina learn something about
herself, and takes joy in bringing the beast
out of Nina whenever possible. 2011 shows no
sign of Kunis slowing and the once child
actress is now earning her marks as a grade
A actress.

Marion Cotillard
When
all is said and done we hope Christopher
Nolan brings Catwoman aboard his final
outing in the Batman cinematic universe. And
for all intents and purposes we hope Marion
Cotillard can at least be cast as Selina
Kyle. Her name was mentioned constantly in
2010 as a rumored contender for Catwoman or
someone closely bonded to Bruce Wayne as a
love interest. Batman buzz notwithstanding,
Marion Cotillard has more than made her
legacy set in Hollywood as one of the most
sultry and sexy leading ladies making her
way in to The Christopher Nolan film world
as the femme fatale and tortured antagonist
Mal, the sub-conscious representation of
Leonardo DiCaprio's memories who started out
as a form of coping with grief and soon took
on a mind of her own intent on corrupting
his character's mind and striking him down
at every turn. Folks who insisted Nolan
didn't know how to write female characters
were proven wrong with Cotillard's stunning
performance as she gave a despicable but
tragic turn as the lingering memory Mal who
hated her husband for refusing to let her
memory rest in peace. We look forward to
more from Cotillard. And come on Nolan.
Catwoman? Cotillard? Please? |

Chloe Moretz
2010 was Chloe Moretz's year, and let's
hope she can keep this momentum. With a
straight head, a good agent, and decent
parenting, Chloe Moretz can rise to the
fame of Meryl Streep or Jodie Foster and
not dive in to a giant crater like
Lindsay Lohan or Tatum O'Neal. Come on,
Chloe! I'm a fan, I have been since you
gave Joseph Gordon Levitt advice on love
and dating in "(500) Days of Summer."
Moretz seems to be the girl with the
right head on her shoulders, and we're
watching her blossom in to a seasoned
actress who is capable of delivering
some amazing performances. 2010 was her
year where she was able to show everyone
what she was capable of in a masterful
series of strategic career moves. For
the cult fans, she starred as Hitgirl,
the foul mouthed costumed superhero in
the R rated "Kick Ass." While the movie
wasn't good, Moretz stole the show, and
her performance in the trailer calling
gangsters "cunts" stormed the web and
made waves.
|
| For
the prestige crowds, she starred in
the R rated "Let Me In," the
critically acclaimed remake of "Let
the Right One In" where she starred
as the vicious vampiric Abby
possessing zero boundaries
displaying a tendency to mutilate
adults, and slip in and out of beds
naked. And just to remind her core
audience that she can play in their
playground, she co-starred in the PG
rated "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," as the
enigmatic Angie Steadman who helped
our main characters discover things
about themselves in the cusp of
puberty. 2011 shows signs of more
Moretz acclaim and she doesn't seem
to be stopping any time soon. With
enough determination we see an Oscar
nomination in her future, and we
hope she continues on the straight
and narrow. It'd be a sad fate to
see her on the verge of a physical
collapse years from now. |
