"Super
Friends" was always a mixed bag of sheer idiocy and just
all out creativity. In the course of one DVD in this new
set from Warner, Superman is reduced to a farmer by Mr.
Mxy wearing a straw hat and being weakened by green
beans, and two episodes later, we see Superman journey
in to an alternate timeline that allows him to land on
Krypton and be able to warn the Kryptonians of the
impending destruction of the planet Krypton, and is able
to touch base with his father. How the show goes from
goofy to just epic in mere episodes is just fantastic
and part of the reason why "Super Friends" continues to
be a property for the fan boys of the world who lovingly
mock this legacy. Of course Superman discovers by
changing the fate of Krypton, he couldn't appear on
Earth to help his Super Friends discovering they were
all destroyed by the Legion of Doom except for Robin
(really?), and must go back to Krypton to ensure its
destruction sealing his fate as an orphan landing on
Planet Earth.
It's
pretty surprising how the writers are capable of telling
such a magnificent story in seven minutes, but they
accomplish it with flying colors. The lost episodes two
disc DVD set contains twenty seven minute episodes of
the "Super Friends" that were produced by Hanna Barbera
and Warner in 1983 even after the "Super Friends" was
cancelled. The episodes inevitably appeared again in
syndication many years later in sporadic time slots, and
are now available for this collection chronicling the
adventures of the "Super Friends" a show simultaneously
goofy and exciting that introduced many young comic book
geeks to some of their favorite comic book characters
and some of their... not so favorite characters. |
| Like the Wonder
Twins. Not surprisingly, they're given the brunt of
some of the most uninteresting and goofy adventures
as one episode shows them trying to stop a runaway
rollercoaster at a carnival (no seriously), and in
another they're forced to fight robotic dolls trying
to take over the world (of course!). Every episodes
tackles an adventure and battle for every character,
so there's something for everyone here. Aquaman
manages to fight Algae monsters in the wreck of the
Titanic with Black Lightning (no seriously!), and
Batman and Robin have to take on the baddies from
the Legion of Doom who trick them in to a swamp trap
and are building a new device that could help
them... all with me now: Conquer the world! In
another of the creative exploits, Superman and
Apache Chief (stereotype Inyuk-chuk!) must fight an
animator who, thanks to lightning and fate, is
turned in to his demonic comic character Bulgor.
True I mock this series like every other geek out
there, but "Super Friends" was an gateway in to the
vast DC universe and allowed me to watch some of my
favorite characters large and in charge. The special
features of this two disc set includes a digital
comic book of the "Super Friends" special issue
where they go from the TV to the screen. Beyond
that, there are the episodes restored and in
widescreen for all fans anxious to re-visit the
exploits of the legendary super team. |
