AMERICAN ASSASSIN: LEE HARVEY OSWALD BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN

With the assassination of JFK being one of the most notorious events in recent history almost every angle concerning every theory has been picked over to the smallest detail. With over forty years of investigation and speculation taking place, and a whole slew of conspiracy theories bombarding us, you wonder what else is left to explore.

The makers of the confused documentary, or docudrama depending which one of their pet theories they are pushing at any given moment, American Assassin: Lee Harvey Oswald Behind the Iron Curtin think that there is much more to be learned from America’s most famous assassin. Concentrating on Oswald’s three year defection to Russia during the height of the Cold War leading up to the JFK assassination, AMERICAN ASSASSIN really does nothing to shed anything new on Oswald, and just succeeds in posing some more obscure questions.

AMERICAN ASSASSIN brings out many people who knew Oswald during his time in Russia, many of them speaking out for the first time because of their fear of reprisals. They paint a picture of a man who was shifty, lazy and untrustworthy even to the KGB, which is strange since they funded Oswald’s defection. The first hand accounts don’t tell us anything that anyone with a passing interest in the JFK assassination didn’t already know about Oswald.
This film is a rambling affair. Statements are made, incredibly bad reenactments are shown, but not once does there seem to be any kind of concrete proof offered to back up any of the theories or suppositions given. Nothing is tangibly offered on how Oswald was permitted to stay in Russia, and why he was allowed to leave, or any solid, credible info on why he received so much doting attention from the Soviet government especially when he was immediately useless to the government.

The film makers seem more interested in making themselves look like they were a major player in the ongoing investigation in the events leading up to the JFK assassination. I will point out that the back cover of this DVD makes special mention that the team behind this documentary pushed on though “numerous setbacks” including reportedly being threatened by the Belarusian KGB. Not once in the body of the feature is this ever mentioned. Even when showing a rather large, nondescript green file reported as being Oswald’s KGB file does any of this come across as credible.

American Assassin: Lee Harvey Oswald Behind the Iron Curtain really wants to be more important than it actually is. With the most basic of researched information presented along with a lot of useless trivia this is nothing more than speculation presented as fact. And it is speculation of the most useless degree, because not one shred of evidence on Oswald’s time in Russia even remotely being connected to his involvement in the JFK assassination is even presented. At the end of this thin documentary you don’t come away with any new information, or even any provocative questions except wondering why they even bothered making this in the first place.
