BIRTHDAY GIRL

John (Ben Chaplin  Murder by Numbers, Lost Souls) is a lonely single man who works a go nowhere job at a bank. One day he decides to order a Russian bride over the internet. He meets Nadia (Nicole Kidman  The Others, Moulin Rouge) who is at first reluctant to know him, and soon the romance begins, but soon, John begins to suspect she's not who he thinks she is. What he'll discover will shock him.

I was very anxious to check this movie out, and what I saw was some good stuff. What stood out most in this movie was Ben Chaplin who gives a great performance as the main character. He's a very imp-ish and shy guy who rarely ever gets angry or annoyed. He's a very interesting character as well, making the movie more likeable as we learn about him. Nicole Kidman gives a great performance as the tough but prissy Nadia. She is a great character with a lot of mystique and mystery. I don't want to give a lot of the movie away or it's surprises, but she manages to be sexy and likeable all at the same time. The movie's very intense often with moments of pure atmosphere and excitement. Probably, the most notable aspect is the great script provided. The banter between many of the characters is very witty and funny, including the banter between Nadia and John halfway through the movie.

The problem with this movie is that it has no idea where it wants to go. The movie first is a romance, then turns into a thriller, and at times it takes a turn to comedy as we begin to see Nadia and John's romance blossom. Then it becomes a drama with certain situations seeming serious, then it once again becomes a comedy with hilarious situations involving the two. The ending leaves you with a question mark as the story seems incomplete somehow. The characters and main situation is never resolved onscreen and the ending seems like the screenwriter ran out of ideas. We're left asking: "Is that all?" without a clear and definite resolution involving each of the characters. I felt robbed and deprived of a possible intense and dramatic ending.

This is a pretty good movie with many plot holes and an incomplete ending, but if you have to watch it, see it for the great acting and dialogue.
