This is a unique movie, I must say. There's rarely any
surfing themed movies out there, and trust me, the ones that are, aren't pretty,
folks. I was intrigued by the trailers of this movie, because there are no
surfing movies, so I figured this might be different. Kate Bosworth is pretty
good as the lead character. She's very likeable and adorable yet fierce.
She lives with three other girls; her two best friends and her little sister
Penny. Michelle Rodriguez plays Eden, the older and more mature of the girls,
helping each one out, but mostly helping out Anne-Marie with her goals.
Michelle, though not much of a true actress,
is pretty good and works with what she has in this movie. The supporting
characters are pretty good; the two leads are accompanied by Sanoe Lake, a real
surfer who plays the free-spirited and wild Lena, along with Mike Boorem (Along
Came a Spider, Hearts in Atlantis) who plays Penny, the wild little sister.
John Stockwell is a great director giving us incredible surfing shots, letting
us go inside the colossal tidal waves. Those scenes were probably the best parts
of the movie. We get some great stunt choreography by the ladies letting us feel
the true action.
The movie is basic
teen hokum with a very mellow and simple plotline with not much depth within the
characters. The movie also has many typical and very predictable plot devices
added just to move the story along to the ending which seemed very off-key. The
movie has no real drama or action to make it nail biting, so it could translate
to teens and adults, which seemed like a waste at times.
A good refreshing movie with a nice plot and
great surfing scenes. Mostly teenage girls will find this appealing, but this is
a movie for anyone and everyone.
