For the MPAA:
THE 10 RULES FOR BUYING A STREET BOOTLEG—IF YOU MUST

Warning: These are not solid rules, so beware and proceed with caution.

1. Never buy a bootleg of a movie that hasn’t been released yet, it's a bad copy, an editor’s screener, or a screener that hasn't been completed yet.

2. The picture on the cover. If it’s clear and crisp, then it’s a good quality bootleg, if its bad quality or blurry cover, then the DVD sucks and is a bad buy.

3.
Always buy from a person who's close to where you live so you won’t have to make a long trip bringing it back to the actual buyer.

4.
Never buy from a person far from you, because you cant return it if you're on vacation or live sixteen miles away.

5.
Always say to the buyer "If this doesn't work, I'll return it, alright?" If he doesn’t let you and puts a fuss about it, then don’t buy it because the bootleg will suck and he knows that. If he nods, then it’s possibly a good copy, and or you have a good chance of getting your money back or trading it in for another copy.

6.
Buy it early, because the average seller leaves in the late afternoon, and sometimes suddenly when the police have caught on to his sight.

7.
If you do return it, make sure he has another copy of the film you want so you can pick it out or trade it.

8.
Never pay more than ten bucks for a bootleg, if you do you're a real sucker.

9.
On rare occasions a person will have a television where they'll show you what the bootleg looks like, if, by some miracle, you find someone like that, have them test it out before your eyes.
