BUBBLE BOY

In the movie, Jake Gyllenhaal (Lovely & Amazing, The Good Girl) plays Jimmy, a boy who when he was born did not have any immunities. He's a generally lonely boy with an very over-protective mother who protects him from the outside world as he lives in his bubble watching everything go by. He then meets Chloe played by Marley Shelton (Valentine, Sugar and Spice) who begins to teach him about the world and she eventually falls in love with him. But Jimmy keeps her from truly touching him, which she wants more than anything. Eventually, she meets another guy who she tells Jimmy she's going to marry him. Jimmy knows this guy is wrong for her, but he doesn't stop her. Now, still in love with her, Jimmy breaks free from his bubble and goes on the road to Niagara Falls to keep her from marrying. In a protective bubble he meets a whole cast of freaks, bikers, and a cult who thinks he's a god. Will he be able to stop the girl he loves from making the biggest mistake of her life? I'm not telling.

I was skeptical going into this movie, I must admit. When this movie first came out, it spurred alot of controversy when a mother of a real bubble boy stepped forth to protest against this opening. Of course, that didn't help the movie much. It got a score of bad reviews, was a flop at the box-office and disappeared from the movies like a flash. But when I was finished watching this, I said, "This is a good movie". I admit this is a movie more for people with sick senses of humor, but it's funny. This movie doesn't portray Jimmy as a freak or lowlife. I admired that the character was portrayed innocent, naive, and very likeable. I liked the way he screamed alot when he was excited, or the way he played the theme to "Land of the Lost" on his guitar nonstop. This was a great character and he makes this an enjoyable movie to watch. The way he looks at the world is something you only see in cartoons and I found that funny. The plot, of course, is original. There's only been one or two movies about the boy in the bubble. Though this movie is a comedy, it has alot of heart and shines some light on the topic, this might even open people up to the topic. The supporting cast gives this movie pep and makes it watchable. Seeing Danny Trejo (Dusk til Dawn, Con Air) as the tough Mexican biker and best friend of Jimmie's was a treat. In the end there is a great surprise that I think people might like. This is recommended.

First of all, the plot starts off well enough, we get to see and know about the bubble boy, the plot gives us time to get to like him and to know all the characters. Then when he begins journeying out on the road, then everything is side-tracked. Especially the whole entire point of the movie. He gets involved with a cult, then a bunch of sideshow freaks. The problem with this movie is pretty evident. It's pretty stupid. I mean the whole concept of a movie about a bubble boy is kind of offensive. That's like making a comedy about a guy with Cancer. Oops, I think I just gave some Hollywood exec an idea for their next movie. Shame on you, Disney.

A weird guilty pleasure for the sick and moronic... and I like it.
