CARLOS OSCAR: LIFE IS CRAZY GOOD!

Carlos Oscar takes a rare road here and decides that hell: he’s making comedy for everyone. There’s no swearing, and there’s no really gimmicky crap, he’s just there to sit and create comedy for everyone to enjoy, much like Jerry Seinfeld. He’s Puerto Rican, he grew up poor and in the Bronx, so it was easy to connect with the man, it’s just that he can never really ever decide what subject to stay on for any given time. Often times when average comedians go from skit to skit, they stay on one subject for about five minutes, but Oscar is like a jack Rabbit from the beginning. He jumps from subject to subject in a mere matter of seconds. Even in the opening, he goes from watching television as a kid, to his kids Halloween, to his over protective father, to his attempts to build a respectable Halloween costume as a poor kid.

I don’t completely dislike Carlos Oscar’s comedy, because he aims for edgy without ever going off with the swears and the sexual humor, and that’s respectable in a day and age where every comedian attempts edge with racial humor. In many ways he resembles John Leguizamo’s tone in which he prefers to focus on his family life past and present and just pop off about his eccentric family, and crazy father, and he’s just as over the top, but he’s just never as funny as I hoped he could have been. I never particularly laughed once throughout the entire special, save for a moment where he’s confronted by fans that refer to him as Mr. Mencia. It’s a shame because there’s plenty for me to connect with and relate to, but very little to laugh at.

Often times when I feel like hysterics and thinking back to a time where we could barely afford color television, I turn to George Lopez, and sadly Carlos Oscar is too across the board and scattered to really force a laugh from me, even if his attempt to reach all audiences is worth respecting.
