CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

This movie has some really great moments. For a summer movie, for the summer experience, it’s really not so bad, and it delivers exactly what you’re expecting and more.

If you’ve seen the original movie, you’ve seen this movie, with several notable exceptions.

The book is more faithfully adapted this time around. From the title, to the way the children are dispatched, to the lack of music save with the Oompa Loompas. They even used Roald Dahl’s original lyrics, which some say destroyed the Oompa Loompas, I say it improved them. I think the reason the original Oompa Loompas were so beloved in the Hackman version was because they were so weird even back then. Now they make sense in the plot, so people tear them apart.

There are some changes to make the film more contemporary. Mike Teavee being more video game oriented and etcetera, but they are minimal.

Depp as Wonka is incredible. Very good at what he does. I wouldn’t say he’s better or worse than Wilder, just distinct. I even saw some Hunter Thompson in there, which was reassuring. He’s going to be playing Thompson again soon, so I hear.

The Oompa Loompa songs, while true to the Dahl lyrics, are sometimes clunky.

The sub-plot with Wonka’s father is very much tacked on and not necessary.

They killed the possibility for the book sequel by not throwing the entire family into the great glass elevator and blasting into space.

There’s also the fact that this movie has already been done, and done DAMN well.

I don’t think they should have remade the original. I like it. But if they HAD to, this is a pretty faithful and in some ways improved version.
