From the director of “Arc”, Steve Gelder, comes “Checking In”, a dark comedy that shows a dumb criminal finding himself sinking deeper and deeper in quicksand when he arrives at a road side hotel one afternoon. Don’t you hate it when you try to rob a roadside hotel, and just as you’re about to make a break for it, you find the situation becoming more and more difficult by the minute? Being a criminal is a bitch, but being a dumb criminal is even worse, and Gelder’s film becomes funnier as the story unfolds with Evans' inept character digging a hole for himself he can't get out of.

Dean Evans is hilarious as an inept dreadlocked thief who finds his situation becoming ever the more complicated as he attempts to rob a hotel and is interrupted by a militant cop, and an intrusive difficult customer (“Got a key there, fragglerock?”), but Gelder’s story becomes even more entertaining as we watch this thief and this cop trying to evade each other, and the thief finding that this officer isn’t going to leave anytime soon. But, Gelder, who has a knack for storytelling, introduces a plot twist that you will not see coming that was executed with an almost ingenious style, and I was left with my jaw hanging down when the credits finished rolling. "Checking In" proves once and for all that crime doesn't pay, when you're a dumb criminal.

Gelder’s newest film is well done, with great performances, and a funny story that only becomes more complicated by the minute and you can't help enjoy the downhill slide. Somehow you want to see the thief get away, and you surely won’t expect the plot twist.
