DEADBEAT

You never really know how being isolated with the dead can affect you, until you’ve seen it for yourself. Raskin’s “DeadBeat” is a bit of a stretch, but that’s why it’s there, it’s a comedy, and a rather odd and memorable one. It's one you won't forget too easily, either. The local mortician is a creepy motherfucker, and he’s suspected of invading the local lab for supplies for mysterious experiments.

When we finally glance at the odd methods he practices involving the dead bodies, we begin to see what isolation with the dead can do to a seemingly normal human being. Raskin’s film is slightly reminiscent of “Re-Animator” in which a man with an obsession for the dead really shows his love when he’s alone with them. Creeping out the security guard, he then proceeds to set the mood with a new body, and the tables are turned. Raskin’s film is off the wall, and rather odd, as we see what happens when you give the dead life for a brief period of time just to satisfy your own sick desires.

Michael Gentile's performance as the mortician comes off as rather over the top, and often times, he manages to chew the scenery. Even though the film has a basic ten minute window, Gentile is quite over the top and never convinced me of the true damage his loneliness with these bodies have committed on him. Was he a sick man or just someone who took pleasure in committing these experiments? I could never be sure, and the screenwriter never makes it very clear to us in the end.

In spite of Gentile's over the top performance, and a main character whose intentions were never made too clear to the audience, "Deadbeat" is a funny, and utterly surreal horror comedy about isolation, and obsession with the dead.
