DEAD SHIT

Things you should know going into this movie: The special effects are cheap, the makeup is cheap (the zombies have made-up faces with clear lines indicating where the makeup ends and their real skin begins), the acting is most likely not up to your standards, the dialogue is spotty and cheesy, the plot is ridiculous, basically everything you might expect from a mainstream (or even an indie) movie is absent from this movie. But I watched the company's first feature, “Dream Reaper,” so I noticed a marked improvement from that film to this (don't get me wrong, I loved “Dream Reaper,” but this movie is clearly better in terms of quality). How so you might ask? Well first, the line delivery and acting are MUCH better. The lines sound like the characters might actually be saying them instead of sounding like a bunch of people reciting memorized lines who tend to put inflection in weird places. There is also a lack of actors looking at the camera in this movie, and the camera angles are much better and more believable. Though the gore is cheap looking it's much better than in “Dream Reaper” and some of the shots are even creepy. Plus the dialogue here is funny, and I think for once I could show this movie to my friends and they'd find it funny too instead of glaring at me and stomping out of my apartment after ten minutes. And though the proclamation on the DVD case about this film's plot might be a tad exaggerated the movie does clearly have a plot that progresses throughout the film ad there are reasons behind the events and character motivations that didn't exist in the company's earlier movie. I don't know if the money they made off the first feature afforded them the luxury of taking more time with this one or what but I'm actually impressed at how the quality improved from that film to this. The script and dialogue are as offensive as ever, but you can't say that coming into this movie and seeing the DVD case you didn't expect that.
The main problem I face in writing this review is knowing that a lot of the people who read it will hate this movie. Most people who viewed the company's first movie with me liked it, but those who didn't had very strong reactions to it and even stomped out of the apartment because they couldn't take it anymore. I can honestly say I don't get it, because whenever I asked them what was wrong, they'd say “it's stupid, and the dialogue is stupid and it doesn't even sound like dialogue it sounds like stupid jokes we'd make while we were hanging our, and the effects are stupid, and it looks really cheap,” and my response would be “Aaaand this is bad why?” I love how I know I could see myself and my friends having some of the same conversations that characters in this movie have and how I can finish the characters' sentences for them, that tells me that the movie is a perfect fit for my insane sensibilities. I also know that this movie is cheap but I've made my own gore effects for a feature before and I can tell you that it's a lot of work and the hours are long and it takes a lot of effort even for cheap looking effects that a lot of people don't appreciate. I see Hollywood productions with 887 times the budget of this movie and I sit through those entire movies and I've already forgotten 99 percent of what I saw by the time I walk out of the theater. I'm STILL laughing about some of the jokes in this movie, and I know it's made with a lot more effort and heart than almost any of those huge budget productions, and that makes me want to spread the word and get people to watch these movies even when I know I'm fighting an uphill battle against people who won't appreciate them. Cinema isn't just for the rich, and I hate how filmmakers tweak their films so instead of being strong the films are weak across the board but just strong enough in certain areas that they'll appeal to the biggest amount of people so they'll make money. In my view, films should either have the balls to go all the way with their vision or not even bother because they're a waste of my time. There are other ways to make money; if you're going to make a movie, make it hardcore, not so watered down and inoffensive that it will make a buck but be eminently forgettable for anyone who watches. This movie is GOOD because it's word-for-word, shot-by-shot exactly what the filmmakers want it to be, an offensively hilarious gory mess, and I love it for that.
