You can watch documentaries about filmmaking
any old day. Shit, they’re a dime a dozen. But to get the true insight
on the filmmaking experience, look no further than documentaries made by
mini-budget filmmakers. I’m not talking about low budget, I’m speaking
of mini-budget. “Doomed to Failure” is a sad and entertaining short
documentary about three movies being made that are doomed to fail,
thanks to… technical difficulties. Yes, you’d never expect it, but this
is likely one of the most common fallbacks for small budget filmmakers.

While folks with more money are
able to replace film, and or equipment, DJ and his crew
experienced pure difficulty filming their projects, based
around equipment that just refused to work. I’ll admit I
haven’t been the biggest fan of DJ Summit’s films, but
“Doomed to Failure” works, and it works very well. With a
competent pace and entertaining commentary, Summit gives us
a glimpse into the common problem folks with slim to zero
budgets experience almost every time they attempt to fulfill
their ambitions and think big. |

Summit may have been doomed to failure, but
his meta-documentary taking a glimpse at the films that were never meant
to be is wry, insightful, and awfully entertaining.
