There is a set of instructions for reading this review. Most of the population will want to skip down to the section marked "The bad," read that, and then skip this movie altogether. Why do I say that? Because this movie is terrible. But then, it's not like the movie is supposed to be good. What's there to say? The movie doesn't really have a plot, so there's not a lot to summarize here, but it's not like it's supposed to have a plot. It's about a bunch of women at a women's prison, they're "raped"...why the quotation marks? This isn't really "rape" here people, these chicks asked for it... besides, it's not rape if he girls blinks twice for "yes" right? Just kidding. But these aren't supposed to be real rape scenes because this isn't a serious movie, it's a format for fantasies of subjugation and degradation to play out. These movies were meant to draw in large crowds of horny men and women who like that kind of thing, and this movie in particular is one of the most fondly remembered for how well it fit the bill of what the viewers wanted to see. This movie is a pioneer in the "women in prison" sub-subgenre of exploitation flicks.

These were gritty, grainy movies set in a vision of a women's prison right out of a wet dream, and all of these movies feature much of the same action. Women are beaten in a sexually stylized way by female guards, women fight and brawl in a sexually stylized way in the recreation yard, in the shower, and in their cells. This movie adds a nice tough; a "torture room" in the prison where women are subjected to sexually stylized torture sequences. Nifty, huh? The prisoners are so mistreated by the guards that some of them attempt to escape, and some of them get away but most of them are caught and punished.

All the women have sex with each other to varying degrees of explicitness. Lather, rinse, repeat. This movie has been in my DVD collection for awhile, and I once gave it a one star rating, but the rating reflects only my desire for most people not to watch this movie, not how I felt about it personally. I personally had a lot of fun with the movie; the sex scenes are good (when they're good) and the atrocious dialogue and acting is a lot of fun to watch. I know how much fun I have with this movie, but most people would hate this movie and claw their eyes out if they had to watch it, and I can't ignore that. Although I have to wonder what people expect from a movie called "bare behind bars;" Oscar winning performances? Give me a break. You watch it to see women going down on each other, sadomasochistic lesbian sex, and terrible acting (if you're into that kind of thing). This movie delivers those things in spades.

The acting is often terrible, the movie is gritty and grainy even in the restored DVD, and there isn't a plot, just a flimsy setup for a bunch of faux torture scenes and a ton of grimy girl-on-girl action. Most everyone in the universe is warned to stay far away from this movie.

Here, I'll tell you everything you need to know about this movie. I had this movie on my shelf and my friend's fiancée picked it up and asked "Um, what is this? It looks like porn, but I didn't think you would have porn in your house." So I explained to her that it was an exploitation film, specifically a "women in prison" film, and I owned it because I want to build a collection of exploitation films. She stared at me for a few minutes and then said "and WHY do you want to own EXPLOITATION films?" like I'd said I want to own maggot infested dead animals. That's the reaction a lot of people have, and those people won't enjoy this movie; but you wouldn't be reading this review if you were one of those people would you? I had fun watching the movie and the next time people are hanging out over at my house getting drunk, I'll put it in and they'll have a good time with me, because the movie is sick subversive fun. That's really all that matters to me.
