THE CHAINSAW SALLY SHOW: SEASON 1 (DVD)

So boys and girls, what did we learn from Leatherface in the seventies? There isn't a damn problem that can't be solved by a stir of the chainsaw, and wouldn't you know it? He's birthed a new follower and her name is Chainsaw Sally. Sure, she looks like a typical run of the mill Goth chick who just wants to go about her business, but deep down she loves to solve all of her troubles with the good old fashioned Chainsaw! And who doesn't? Sally is a family woman in Porterville Maryland running her own library and when she's not caring for her family she is--well--mutilating morons with power tools and her use of the chainsaw tool which pleases her so (dear god don't ever give her the wrong fucking cookies!), and wouldn't you believe it? It works nine times out of ten. April Monique Burril is hilarious and insanely bad ass as this mild mannered chick who deep down is a pure demented psycho willing to do whatever it takes to get her point across, and "The Chainsaw Sally Show" follows the exploits of Sally and her family as they live life day by day. This is one of the first (and likely only) splatter family sitcoms I've ever seen and from the first time I saw the cover for the Season 1 DVD, I was hooked. JimmyO Burril makes good use his low budget by invoking the likes of HG Lewis to create a spin on the modern family. If you can't wrap your mind around the concept, picture the Firefly's from "Devil's Rejects" trying to live out life in a small town, and you'll capture this series in a nutshell.

Except I had more fun with this show than I did Zombie's entry. The premise for the series is simple and every episode contains a fairly compact plot to accompany brutal mutilations. Episode one (entitled "Dewey") shows Sally and her new employee Poe attempting to learn the Dewey decimal system and Sally recollects how she acquired the library which involves her attempts to take out books and then mutilating the owners when they refuse to let her take them on the basis that she has no identification.

On paper this sounds ridiculous, but that's the fun of "The Chainsaw Sally Show," after all. Everyone here seems to be having a blast and watching Chainsaw Sally in full regalia striking back at the yuppies who laughed at her is just all kinds of exciting. The over acting and splatter and ridiculous premises make for some damn good times that are all too fleeting. Remember how every episode of "Welcome Back, Kotter" began with a joke by Kotter? Well, every episode of this wicked show begins with Sally mowing down and mutilating a poor girl in the woods. Hey, everyone has their hobbies, right? The rest of the season feature Sally giving some genuine payback to employee Poe's tormentors by knocking them off systematically, a local cop looking for Chainsaw Sally and a connection with her murders through a local contact, and Ruby making his own meat piņata for Halloween!

The cast is quite good with lovely Lilli Burril as Poe acting as a sort of balance for Sally's madness possessing an overt sanity that keeps her a constant straight man to Sally's escapades and giving her a more humane persona, while Sally's brother Ruby is the right dose of lunacy to give Sally someone to play with and bounce dialogue off of. Azman Toy is hilarious in his supporting role and is always on the verge of breaking loose with Sally always bringing him back to the thin line. Aside from that "The Chainsaw Sally Show" is hilarious and utterly demented with genuinely engrossing episodes and creator JimmyO Burril implements the talents of his entire cast very well. "The Chainsaw Sally Show" is a really gross little sitcom and if you fancy yourself the gore hound, I suggest picking it up as soon as possible.

With commentary, a laugh track, and other assorted features, JimmyO Burril's "The Chainsaw Sally Show" is a hilarious and brutal little horror sitcom with the lovely April Monique Burril kicking tons of ass as the vindictive unabashed psychopath with a heart of gold who always gets her man... or woman... or inept bestiality enthusiast. I loved it.

  • If there is any justice in this world there has to be a Cassie Hack and Chainsaw Sally crossover. There just has to be.
