THE GOOD SISTERS: UNRATED PSYCHO-SEXUAL DIRECTOR'S CUT

This is unlike most of the films from JimmyO I've seen, even an hour after viewing it I'm still not sure what to make of it and director JimmyO takes great pains in constructing a film that's slowly paced and underplayed to the point where it may polarize fans of his previous works that are much more gung-ho and in your face. "The Good Sisters" can best be described as a Bizarro version of "Rosemary's Baby" in which our protagonists are in fact witches who are living among normal folks. Sisters Kendra and Breanne are tightly knit sisters who practice witchcraft and live their lives as average botanists who commune back and forth sight unseen. The movie takes a definite amount of patience to be seen as JimmyO relies on mounting tension to build up what is essentially the unraveling of power and the paranoia of two beings that ultimately proves to be their downfall. April Monique Burril and Debbie Rochon give sharp and compelling performances as the sisters who rely on one another to catch on to the plot that may or may not be occurring all around them. JimmyO plays them to their strengths allowing the raven haired beauties to have fun with their roles, while also providing some interesting characterization and undertones of incest that keep audiences glued to the screen wondering if these characters will bond closer and overcome the odds, or split apart as the screws turn.

When Kendra, as played by April Monique, begins receiving omens and visions of a looming threat among their seemingly harmless neighbors, they take great pains in investigating and look for signs that one of them, or perhaps all of them, are plotting to bring them down. Sadly, the film suffers from considerable flaws that keeps "The Good Sisters" from being truly excellent. I was never sure why they were so intent on keeping their identities and practices secretive only to see their neighbors baffled at their loud chanting and obvious activities.

What's never explained is if the sisters were trying draw out any threats, or if they were just not aware of their volume. This leaves a rather gaping hole that remains in the air. Meanwhile the energy is otherwise lackluster with a pacing that changes quite often building up to events and then just backing off, leaving the story to ultimately feel uneven. However, once the second half rolls around, JimmyO pulls out all of the stops with surreal imagery and haunting violence that flexes the actresses charms to the fullest. Rochon is very entertaining as the well meaning and independent Breanne who is looking out for her sister and takes charge when she thinks the neighbors are planning for an ambush, while Burril is rather spooky as the off kilt and erratic Kendra who takes glee in making others suffer. Thankfully the most important element to the film is their chemistry, and they bring oodles of it to the screen with great dialogue, and matching eccentricity that makes them forces to be reckoned with. The twist in the climax that leads to the big reveal is rather surprising and pretty much explains to us that sometimes people are their own worst enemies. "The Good Sisters" won't re-invent the genre, but it is a damn good time to be had.

So far it's definitely not Jimmyo's best with a pacing and energy that's considerably lackluster, but for a royal mind fuck that hearkens back to the satanic cult films of the seventies, "The Good Sisters" definitely does the trick keeping us guessing at every turn and bringing us in close to the characters. It's a fine little supernatural thriller that Ms. Rochon and Ms. Burril keep afloat.
