LADY TERMINATOR

As the title suggests, Lady Terminator is an unapologetic and blatant rip off of James Cameron’s “The Terminator.” Whereas that classic movie was steeped firmly in the sci-fi genre, Lady Terminator is a mish mash of a little bit of everything. This Indonesian blockbuster is not a very well made movie, with the story paper thin and handled very badly, however it is also a hysterical movie with off the wall characters and situations that truly have to be seen to be  believed. A true classic in the “so bad its good” category, Lady Terminator is a blast and a fun ride from start to finish but is one of the crappiest movies you’ll ever see with a smile on your face.

After a prologue where a deadly sea Princess with the bad habit of castrating unsatisfactory lovers is dispatched by her latest conquest (and vows revenge on the great granddaughter of her slayer), the movie flashes forward to the wonderful and hideous 80’s where our lead character, an anthropology student played by Barbara Anne Constable, is possessed while scuba diving near the lair of the sea Princess. Thus, Constable emerges naked from the ocean ready to destroy anyone who gets in her way.

The main characters are a dull lot; for example the head cop in charge is one of most unappealing heroes I’ve ever seen. There’s nothing else left to do but to root for our female killing machine, who by now has an extensive arsenal of automatic weapons and a mean streak big enough to use them. Bodies drop everywhere as the bullets fly in malls, a disco and a police station. Constable mows down innocent people with malicious glee and even finds time amid the carnage to indulge in some more sea Princess groin ripping. All this and there’s a blatant, redundant eyeball self-surgery scene just so you don’t forget what movie they’ve gotten all their best ideas from.

There are so many blatant uses of scenes and dialogue from “The Terminator” than I would legally think was possible. The only other so obvious stealing from a movie has to be Bruno Mattei’s pillaging of scenes, characters and dialogue from “Aliens” for his movie “Shocking Dark” (aka “Alienators”). Lady Terminator, being a dubbed Indonesian import, is saturated with acting that is over the top and the dubbing and music are outright atrocious. Apparently every foreign country that tries to imitate a US blockbuster has to completely amp up the most garish details to a disgusting degree. Your 80’s movie has some neon and a little “here and there” incidental music with synthesizers? Well, ours will be wall to wall neon with music that never stops and sounds like
a teenager made it on his Casio keyboard.

Explosions abound, people die, breasts are flashed and the story drags on to its obviously ridiculous ending with such glee that you can’t help but enjoy it. The movie is a rip off, but is one of the few movies that declare itself to be a rip off… and is proud of it. Unabashedly dumb, violent and gratuitous, Lady Terminator might not be for everyone but if you like cheesy exploitation films then this one is for you.
