SCORE (UNCENSORED VERSION) (DVD)

A little bit of "Dangerous Liasons" with some Jess Franco mixed in for good measure, "Score" is one of the most erotic suspense films I've ever seen. It's a film that demonstrates the unabashed allure of sexual experimentation by introducing two couples, one of whom has something to teach the other. The uncensored version released by Cult Epics is a 1972 bit of clever play on sexual dynamics and the swinging fun loving sixties where a prudish couple becomes the prey for a swinging couple who bet they can seduce and entice both honeymooning couples in to bisexuality, orgies, and a bit of homosexuality just for good measure. And when the chips finally fall where they may, director Radley Metzger is able to confront the sexual excesses of the sixties and seventies and the decadence that is the cult of swingers, all of whom turn the display of love in to something of a guilty activity. "Score" is a film primarily devised to reveal the master plan of Elvira and Eddie, two swinging folks who have a game they play.

They meet a new target. They entice them with riches and taboo activities. And when they've finally had enough they bed them introducing them to a part of themselves they likely never knew existed or didn't want to admit existed. They have in mind two new folks Betsy and Jack. Betsy is a prudish religious young girl and Jack is a standoffish gentleman who'd rather masturbate than sleep with his wife, and they happen to conveniently be friends with Elvira and Eddie.

What begins is a game of cat and mouse and cat inevitably consuming said mouse Hetzberger explores the couple's games and their tricks of manipulation that involve crafty bets, cryptic communication, and even manipulation of the environment around them to keep their prey in doors and around them at all times. "Score" is very much an intense bit of erotica and one that is unflinching in its new Uncensored format that conveys just about every bit of sexual excess these two people could want and or need, and then paints the screen with hardcore sex scenes once the couples switch players and decide the same sex is much more interesting than pursuing both mates on their own influence of drugs and alcohol. "Score" is in the end a very clever and entertaining erotic thriller that ends much like Jethro Tull's "Teacher" where the student has learned something about themselves, and perhaps can even give the teacher something to take home with themselves. Plus, you have to love the theme song.

Among the bells and whistles we're given the twenty minute "The Making of Score" with an on the set look of the making of the film with Radley Metzger and co. and an extensive look at the on location shoot that explores the difficulty making the film and the political controversy behind the shoot; "Keeping Score with Lynn Lowry" is a twenty minute interview with star Lynn Lowry who plays the beautiful angelic Betsy; there is an audio commentary with director Radley Metzger and Michael Bowen, and trailers to three Metzger productions including "Score."

Radley Metzger's ode to sexual exploration and discovery is still a very taut and enticing little gem from the late sixties free love era that gave way to swinging seventies. With a clever premise and strong performances, "Score" is an erotic thriller very much in the tradition of "Dangerous Liasons," with an uncensored version now on DVD worthy of your consumption.
