TRASHHOUSE

Welp, they can’t all be winners, can they? I wasn’t too hard on Pat Higgins’ horror science fiction thriller when everything was over and done with because frankly, this seemed to be a very large effort in part of Higgins, who didn’t really look to have very many resources at his disposal. Because “Trash House” is a large concept stuck in a micro-budget terrain. This isn’t the splatterific gory slasher I naturally assumed it was, but thankfully Higgins doesn’t completely blind side us. “Trash House” is a bit of “Flatliners” mixed with “Altered States” bringing to fruition the strangers in the house formula Higgins sold in “Killer Killer.” This time around, a group of people are called on for a government experiment with reality and after passing tests judging them as balanced individuals, they’re allowed to go hogwild and create their own varied realities. The problem is that one of the group has lied on their tests and is using this new ability to kill each of the volunteers.

“Trash House” suffers from a tedious pacing which sadly doesn’t make it a very entertaining experience. While the performances are strong, Higgins never quite takes this slick premise and makes it pop. There are varied realities that were quite eye catching including the fifties sitcom reality one character creates, while the tones of each are captured quite well on such a small state of production. Higgins may not have a home run on his hands like “Killer/Killer” or “The Devil’s Music,” but he definitely has an eye for the twisted and dark with some scenes just outlandishly morbid.

Higgins shoots for a character study in some instances with focus on the people in this house producing their own reality, and the dive into pure horror with the psychotic house mate bringing his reality to kill everyone else is quite interesting. Sadly, I just couldn’t enjoy “TrashHouse” on the level I did with Higgins other films. The director consistently entertains me with his low budget horror flicks, and while I didn’t respond to this, I appreciate what he was going for. Don’t take it too seriously, and you may enjoy it.

Show me a director with a perfect body of work in film, and I'll show you a fan in complete denial. I've enjoyed much of what Pat Higgins has brought to the horror genre, but "Trash House" is unfortunately a great premise with a sub-par end result.
