GHOST RIDER

Ghost Rider is a strong, fun film with a lot of great action, humor, and a solid plot. There are inconsistencies, but they’re swept away in the fun of the spectacle, at least on first viewing.

As a kid, I always loved Ghost Rider, even if I didn’t follow the comics closely in the all-too-gimmicky 90s comic scene. The idea of a blazing avenger of hell damned forever who chooses instead to fight for good is a strong candidate for a serious, literary comic book examination of the obligation to do good.

Ghost Rider is not this, and that could have killed it.

Instead, Ghost Rider is a basic superhero story about a guy who is condemned by Mephist-opheles to have a flaming skull and turn into a sadistic killer/avenger, cut and dried. No deeper meaning, like Garth Ennis might have sought, but then, no cliché, horrid crap like in Batman and Robin, either.

I found myself guffawing with laughter at times, which is weird, because I expected this to be a serious film.

It keeps levity which is disconcerting, strange, and enough to hold you. The effects on the Rider are passable, not great, but then, I didn’t really expect too much in the way of Ghost Rider being innovative. It’s damned hard to do a flaming skull accurately, and here it’s not only well done, it’s intriguing. Obviously CG, but it works with the cartoony feel of the piece. I was surprised, given the low recognition on the character, that the effects not concerning Ghost Rider were so well done.

A fun, popcorny movie that you will enjoy if you don’t take it seriously.

If you’re critical, you’ll hate the film. There are multiple plot flaws and incoherencies, and the ending is predictable and absurd in its simplicity. This movie has, literally, no subtext.

That doesn’t stop it from being fun, however. I expected to get another Fantastic Four with this one, a total stink-fest, but I might actually get this on DVD. It’s fun, good for a night out, and it’ll at very least keep your eyes happy.
