GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES

This movie is as sad as everyone makes it out to be. It’s basically the tale of the slow death of two kids as a result of World War 2. We watch the little girl in particular suffer, starving to death while being innocent, cute, and basically everything a little girl is.

The boy, despite being too young to shoulder the burden, works as hard as he can and ends up dying alone and without his family in a subway.

Knowing me, that’s an almost instant winner. I mean, it’s real, it’s sad, it’s guttural, it depicts the horror of a real concept, the perils of war, and it also puts it through a narrative that pulls no punches, people who actually experienced it as opposed to people who commentate on the whole affair in retrospect.

After you watch the movie, it sticks with you more than you expect it to. The flaws make themselves obvious, but the message stays with you.

The animation is pretty stereotypical, and it made me wonder why the heck it had to be animated instead of a film. Obviously, you can’t waste away a little girl on the camera, so that’s half crap to say, but I guess what I’m saying is that the medium didn’t really add anything to the film beyond the firebombing scenes, which it should if it’s animation over all formats.

Also, the conclusion was foregone, and when you know a character is going to die it’s less about the sadness of the death and more the journey. I missed a bit of that tension.

A good film. I didn’t enjoy it at first, but it grows on you. A lot. It’s one of those movies you scoff at, then end up watching again. Worth a look.
