There has to be a very
specific set humor when applied to "Hard Boiled" because during the
entire five minute feature from Amoeba Films, I couldn't understand if
this was supposed to be a comedy, a satire, or a twist on the classic
mafia movies. Is it all of them? Is it purposely absurd? In either case,
"Hard Boiled" is a goofy five minute comedy short about two bickering
Italian gangsters furiously shipping big crates of a "product" they
insist the boss is most definitely intent on taking. They hesitate to
help them be shipped since they're going to be handed out to children,
but nevertheless they remain true to their duties.

What we find
in the final minutes is that they're not gangsters in the
strictest sense, and their boss is the Easter bunny who is
dressed like a cliche Italian mobster but with a bunny
costume. I'm not sure if this is a mobster movie about
gangsters humoring their demented boss, or a jab on the
Easter tradition but I wasn't enjoying myself, and most
importantly I found most of the comedy to be forced and
utterly flat for the most part. |

The nonsensical
dialogue, matched the director's feign attempts to keep an air of
mystery until the big reveal is grating and Brian Wimer's direction is
pretty average with nothing new to add to this unique premise that is
never sure what it quite wants to be even after the credits have rolled.
No other writers could come up with a premise for a short film like
this, and I think that's how it should have stayed for a little while.
In spite of the unique
premise, "Hard Boiled" is a five minute gag that fails to be funny or
memorable and is just one big wink to the audience that was probably
much funnier to the people making it than it will be for the people
watching it.
