Skrullektra's story is finally explained. As is the Breakout from New Avengers 1! Why wasn't this in New Avengers? You've got me, but Skrulls Skrulls Skrulls galore!

Commentary:
Let me get it out of the way yet again with this note on spoilers:

THE ACE OF SPOILERS THE ACE OF SPOILERS!

Skrullektra took over for the real Elektra months prior to the Raft breakout. During a long fought battle between a previously meditating Elektra and a number of Skrulls (one posing as Elektra, one as Daredevil, and one as Wolverine) attack Elektra and take the fight to the streets of NYC. Hopefully in the middle of the night as the fight is all kinds of loud and explosive.

The Elektra Skrull that attempted taking her over was quickly trounced and swiftly murdered with a stomach stab just like the old Bullseye stabberoo (after using it's Super-Duper-Skrull powers to change into a mix of the Thing, Elektra, and Ghost Rider, among others). Taking to the streets, Elektra fought Wolverskrull and Skrulldevil and was whooped with eye beams and big old fists and presumably murdered (a lot of blood for her not to be dead), the Skrulldevil changed appearance to take over as Skrullektra and took to the Hand, in an effort to take them over. We do learn from this issue that Elektra had died and was brought back by the Hand (even though I was hoping she'd been dead the whole time), and was replaced more recently. Still no set time-frame, but essentially gets the point across.

Which Skrullektra did by killing the Hydra boss that had sway over them with a sword to the throat and chopping the head off the leader of the Hand ninja. Oh, yeah, one more thing. Skrullektra also hired Electro for the Raft incident and put herself in place due to Skrullessica Drew's suggestion. Maybe they were lovers, but that lesbian kiss was weird (Skrullbian?). So yeah. Skrullektra hired Electro for the Raft breakout. He did the deed and caused the creation of the New Avengers. Looks like Skrullessica wasn't as smart as she thought.

The issue itself is essentially silent. There is barely any word bubbles throughout the issue, and when there are some, they are few (except for the part with Skrullessica and Skrullektra). But silent issues work. For a character like Elektra, it makes sense. So I'm not faulting Bendis for that. Less word bubbles might be a little jarring as we're trying to learn about the plans of the Skrulls and what the hell is going on, but this time, it worked. We got everything we needed on the page.

And that's the biggest surprise here. Khoi Pham pulled this one out of his hat and his magic pencil is back. His first issue on Mighty Avengers was rough around the edges and seemed a bit rushed, but this one was sharper, prettier, and much easier to follow. The characters were more appealing and easier to follow, and there was something about the way he crafted each character that seemed realistic, right down to the Skrulls. They were crazy detailed, but completely grounded in reality. It worked wonders and I am so happy that he will be the main guy on this book.

His art is quickly reminiscent of Leinil Yu and Billy Tan, and following in their footsteps on this Avengers book, I just hope he keeps up with it. Because he's gonna be good if he can. And this book is just all kinds of awesome today. Good jobs all around and worth a quick glance. You can read the book in 2 minutes, so may as well, right? And I usually complain about the covers to these books, but this time it works. It actually fits the story, especially as Elektra fits Skrulldevil. On first glance I thought it stupid as we all know Skrullektra was the first sign of invasion, so why would she be fighting Skrulldevil?

But now it makes sense. Still not great, but it actually fits this comic in particular, so that's a glorious thing.
