Come back in time with us as we reveal all there is to learn about SKRULLMAGEDDON!!!!

Commentary:
You know what? This was a good comic. This was the way to tell one of the opening chapters of this major event. Turn back the clock and give us a TON of information. And it looks really pretty too.

SPOILERS HO!!! BE FOREWARNED LADIES AND GENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've been warned.

From the first panel, we learn that the Skrull king/warlord/Richard Simmons was stationed at Satriani (a nod to Joe Satriani, world-renowned guitarist and Marvel Comics fan). We go right back to the end of issue 1 of the Illuminati mini-series. We go to the end with the pissed off Skrull captain ready for war and wanting to screw the Marvel heroes and villains. But he sits and waits and King Dorrek fights with Princess Veranke about waiting. About not taking action immediately. And she tells him Galactus will come (not in those words) and is banished for that.

But wait...there's more.

Dorrek has the Skrull-Scientists working with genetic samples from the Illuminati and possiby building better soldiers. Yay. Foreshadowing.

Anyways, we get a lot of backstory about the Skrulls. About genetic testing on Skrulls and the creation of the new Super-Skrull warriors who have the powers of the Illuminati. And then Galactus comes and Princess Veranke must take over as Dorrek is dead (?).

She is advised by her Skrully pals of the creation of an undetectable skrull, and in pops SKRULLEKTRA. But how long has she been a skrull? They mention her dying and coming back (the real Nacho-Cheesy edition of Elektra) and then they mention Skrullektra's contacts on Earth (ol Blindy, One-Eye, Stumpy, and the Foot Clan) and she has not been detected for the entire cycle (year? 8 years? 40 years?).

It gets better.

Princess Veranke wants to be a part of the invasion. She wants to be on the frontlines doing with Dorrek would not do. Proving that she is a better leader. And she wants to be in place as the one Skrull-invader that can do the most damage. And she gets to be...

ROLL THAT BEAUTIFUL BEAN FOOTAGE!

Bendis writes an amazingly detailed script. I know he gets a lot of guff for writing a ton of dialogue sometimes and other times he gets guff for his comics being read in the span of 40 seconds. This is a highly detailed script and it hits the mark very well. The comic does its job, it doesn't give away all the secrets, but it tries its damnedest to reveal what needs to be revealed before the next issue of Skrullocalypse comes out. We learn (kinda) how they are undetected. We learn that they were smart this time as the original Super-Skrull is kind of an outdated model (like a 79 Ford Pinto staring in the face of a brand new BMW 323I). So they get new genetic samples and make better, faster, stronger models. Like Steve Austin. And Stone Cold did in fact say so!

And he is expertly helped along with the Illuminati partner in crime Jim Cheung. Who I will always call Jimmy Cheung from his days drawing Teen Tony Stark (I'm hoping he shows up in Iron Man 2) and then Maverick and X-Force. But boy has his art gotten better. Cleaner lines. More expressive faces (that still almost all look the same, which kinda works on the Skrull planet as they have always been drawn with similar features) and his art is so well translated nowadays by John Dell and Justin Ponsor. It is expertly handled and expertly colored, and it isn't blah art like Maleev's art on Mighty Avengers 12 (and I'm sure to be 13 as well). Jim Cheung's art pops off the page, it is comic-art. It isn't flat and boring, it's very very nice to look at. And his ass is late all the time too. Bastard.

Oh... I didn't tell you who Princess Veranke was going to be? Surely you'd think it was Reed Richards. Sue Richards. Nick Fury. Tony Stark. The President. You know, someone who can inflict a lot of damage on a lot of people with just the flick of a finger. Dr. Strange. The Sentry. God. But who does she go as (at least, we assume from the last panel that she will)?

Jessica Drew: Spider-Woman. Nick Fury eat your heart out. No one ever wants to be One-Eyed Willie. Everybody wants to be a Skintight Betty.

And we're off for more Skrullmageddon....NEXT TIME!
