THE POINT

Even the most optimistic person in the world would be hard pressed to find anything good about this cartoon. But if I had to pick something, it would be that it was only 74 minutes long (which was still way too much.)

Where do I begin? The Point is an animated TV film narrated by Ringo Starr that aired in the early 70’s on ABC. The animation looks similar to that of the old Schoolhouse Rock Cartoons like ‘Conjunction Junction’ and ‘I’m Just a Bill’ only, surprisingly, even more lame. I remember thinking as a kid: ‘I don’t care how a bill is made. This is boring…I just want to play outside.’ But after watching The Point, ‘I’m Just a Bill’ seems like cinematic masterpiece.

The Point tells the tale of Oblio, the only round-headed boy in a village of points. Oblio is a good kid and everybody likes him except for the Count and his son. The Count brings Oblio to court for breaking ‘The Law of the Land’: Everything and everyone must have a point. Oblio gets banished to the pointless forest where he and his dog, Arrow, share an enlightening adventure before returning home. Although short, the characters in the movie are so irritating, that every minute of the film is excruciating beyond measure. To prove my ‘point’, I’d like to go over the list of offending characters:

The Count: Although he has a good vocabulary, this guy is a class ‘A’ jerk. He takes the fact that Oblio beat his douche bag of a son at a game way too seriously and orchestrates Oblio’s banishment to ‘The Pointless Forest.’ Get a life, man. Expend some of that energy on a crossword puzzle with all those fancy words you know, not on exiling a child.

The King: Total Loser. He lets the Count push him around and sentences Oblio to banishment. Horrible leader.

Oblio’s Parents: Their son gets banished and they do absolutely nothing about it. What the fuck?! That is your only son! Appeal the case, cry and scream, or at least act mildly upset.

The Pointed Man: Oblio repeatedly meets him in ‘The Pointless Forest’ and every time the encounter becomes progressively more confusing. This three-headed hemorrhoid talks too much and makes no sense. I kept hoping Oblio would backhand this bastard, but was always let down.

The Rock Man: Two of the most annoying things in existence are Beatniks and Know-it-All’s. The Rock man combines both in one poorly drawn package. I hated him.

The Tree Man: He talks a lot about nothing and complains even more about less. He makes a big deal about ‘manufacturing’ leaves and is rude to Oblio. Every tree makes leaves you dickhead, you’re not special.

If these characters weren’t bad enough, the soundtrack to this movie only amplifies the crappiness. There’s one thing I’m sure of and it’s that drugs were definitely involved in the making of the music. How can you make up a song about tea and decomposing whales without the help of mind-altering hallucinogens?

The movie is titled The Point, most of the characters were pointed, and I know somewhere in the deep recesses of Director Fred Wolf’s heavily tripping mind, he was trying to make a point, but I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what that point was. The characters were jerks, the music was painful and the movie so horribly shitty, that even if there was a point, I would never have been able to exercise enough focus to find it.
