PUSHING DAISIES: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON (DVD)

Bryan Fuller’s “Pushing Daisies” is such a sweet series. It’s so sweet that if you don’t cover your mouth while watching, you may just grab some cavities and tooth rot. Once upon a time there was a lonely pie maker named Ned. Ned loved to make pies; why? Because it’s quirky, and without the character trait, we wouldn’t know how Burton-esque this show is. The problem with Ned is that he can revive the dead with one touch, and if he doesn’t bring them back to the after lifer after a certain time, someone will die to replace the hole left. Ned just revived his long lost love you see, and now he can’t bring himself to do it. She’s a supporting character on “Pushing Daisies” and the two can never touch in spite of being in love. Isn’t Ned selfish? Why must Ned let people die to keep his girlfriend? Will this line of saccharine narration end?

Sorry, but I’m just following along with the smug artificially sweet trend pushed by “Pushing Daisies” that does everything in its power to convince us that it was made by Tim Burton while premise is often much too contrived and recycled to thoroughly enjoy. Granted I’ve seen so much worse television series in my lifetime, what with the talented folks starring like Chi McBride, and the surprisingly sexy Kristin Chenowith but “Pushing Daisies” is a bit too saccharine and cuddly to enjoy.

As for the DVD, we’re only given “Pie Time: Time for Pie” a practice in redundancy but a great extras that features some magnificent animated menus that segue in to various important clips from the show that the creators and writers weigh in on and let us know why they chose to film it and what inspired such a big moment in the series; for example (Spoilers oncoming!) when Ned confesses to Chuck that he killed her father. By the way as someone with a sweet tooth I loved the look at the assorted pies in the menus. Cherry pie is my favorite. I love Cherry Pie.

There's some good talent behind "Pushing Daisies" with some genuine whimsy on board, but it often tries too hard to be whimsical to the point where it's difficult to swallow. "Pushing Daisies" will respond to some audiences, but as for me it is too contrived and cutesy. It's a good thing the DVD will have some chestnuts for the fans to chew on.
