What attributes to the current success and immense popularity of “My
Space”? I can never really figure it out. I have a personal page and a
networking one, so I won’t pretend I hate My Space, but for a site that
runs well only half the time, has trouble loading, is incredibly slow,
and is down half the time, I wonder why My Space continues to remain
such a humongous website. One of the most ridiculous but warranted feuds
on the mega website is the subscribers’ feuds with Tom. Who is Tom? Tom
runs the entire site. Tom is probably a completely bogus character by My
Space, or Tom is a real person, regardless, Tom is hated. Tom, your
first friend when you sign up, is one people usually delete, in spite of
the fact My Space insists you keep him added to be updated on site
changes. But I digress “I Killed Tom@Myspace” is a spoof of not only the
My Space craze, but of Tom.
The man known only as Tom. My Space, mostly a site for attention whores,
sluts, pedophiles and aspiring artists, is finally given a worthy spoof.
“I Killed Tom” is a sick and weird semi-thriller about a man who is so
addicted to the site (aren’t they all?) that he feels the only way he
can eliminate the addiction is to kill Tom. It makes enough sense. The
remainder of the film is comprised of star and director Shane Ryan
letting loose in front of the camera, killing people who looks like Tom
and planning on finding him beyond all costs. Of course, the film’s
final ironic and hilarious act explores how the website can get under
your skin even when you don’t even realize.
Of course, one has to wonder how much relevance this film will have in
five years. Ever watch “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” today? It’s not as
funny as it used to be because the context is horribly out of date, and
with the short attention span of America’s youth, this film won’t be as
funny five or six years from now. Probably less. In spite of the talent
behind it, I can’t imagine it being as funny years from now when My
Space isn’t as popular or much of a fad.
Must kill… Shane
Ryan--I mean Tom. “I Killed Tom@MySpace” is a demented and twisted short
film that’s not only funny, but will really make you feel like a loser
for being addicted to My Space. You loser. Yeah you, the one who is on
My Space for three hours. What relevance this will have in five years,
no one knows, but Shane Ryan chews the scenery in what is one of the
funniest shorts I’ve seen in a while.
