Andreas (Charles Tingwell) and Claire
(Julia Blake) are old lovers who after forty years apart living life, reunite again after the
death of Andreas' wife. The sparks are still there between the two as they
experience lovemaking and love once more but Claire is in a less than fulfilling
long marriage and she must decide which man she wants to spend the rest of her
life with. But as Andreas and Claire discover something tragic in their life,
they soon must love before time runs out.
I liked the concept of how writer Paul Cox showed that even
in old age, people don't stop falling in love nor do they stop living life. It
was refreshing to see this romance sparkle on the screen.
This garnered a lot of critical rave, but I
failed to see or catch anything even slightly interesting in the story or the
movie. The movie drags on for a long time through these redundant and asinine
silent flashback scenes between the two main characters as younger teenagers. We
know the two split up though Paul Cox never actually explains it to us; maybe
they felt it wasn't relevant but I thought it would have helped me out a lot.
Everything in this movie is so tame and monotonous as I found it extremely
difficult to involve myself into the reunion of these two people. Also, the love
triangle between Claire, Andreas, and John is so tedious and uninteresting, I
never found myself hoping for the two to fall in love. Claire is so cold to her
husband despite his begging and constant stalking to the two that it's almost
painful. True, John her husband was never good to her, but he's such a feeble
character. Claire is such an unlikable character because she tends to be so
self-involved and oblivious to other people except Andreas. The story is dull
and hard to get into as I never really cared much for anything the characters
did. The love scenes look tame and rehearsed and the romance between Andreas and
Claire is so void of chemistry or texture that I didn't buy it once. The ending
is also unsatisfying feeling that rather than they sealing up the romance they
took the easy back door out.
I found it hard to get involved in the story
or any of the characters and simply found it unsatisfying and lacking in any
texture.
