Roger Ebert is without
question the most popular film critic of all time. When
people think of movie reviews, they think of Roger
Ebert. Roger recently celebrated forty years of writing
movie reviews for the Chicago Sun-times. Can you imagine
doing something that you love for forty years? I can
only hope that I have half of the success that Roger
Ebert has had in his career. Hell, I'd settle for one
percent of the success that Roger has had. With that
said, his job is not always gravy.
It might sound like a
fantastic job on paper. You get PAID to write movie
reviews. You get PAID to watch movies. What's better
than that? Not much. Roger has lived the good life. On
the same token, he's also had hours of his life taken
away from him due to bad movies. Roger HAS to watch
every single movie. Roger has seen all of the classics
during his time reviewing movies. He's also seen all of
the clunkers. Roger's new book "Your Movie Sucks" takes
a glance at some of the worst movies that
Roger has had to review. "Your Movie Sucks" is the
follow-up to his successful book "I Hated, Hated, Hated
This Movie," which was released a few years ago. |

First of all, you
might be wondering what inspired the title of this book. You can
look no further than "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" and Rob
Schneider. I don't think I've ever seen Roger get so upset
during a review than during his review of "Deuce Bigalow:
European Gigolo." Roger is usually calm, cool, and relaxed. I
could have sworn I saw smoke coming out of Ebert's head during
his review of the film. In his written review, Ebert proclaimed,
"Your Movie Sucks" to Mr. Schneider. All of this is discussed in
the book. It's quite entertaining. Roger definitely has a way
with words. The book also rips apart 2005's "Chaos." The book
gives the makers of "Chaos" a chance to defend themselves as
well. They engage in a debate with Ebert about violence in
American Cinema. It's a fantastic read. You might not always
agree with Ebert, but he always stands behind his reviews. The
book also features the feud between Roger Ebert and the director
of "The Brown Bunny."
"Your Movie Sucks" covers films that Roger has reviewed from
2000-2006. Roger often uses very unique methods to review bad
films. He even goes so far as to write a letter to a young child
who recommended "A Cinderella Story." Roger sometimes even
bursts into song when reviewing a bad movie. The most amazing
aspect of this book is the fact that Roger creates a sense of
optimism and hope with each bad movie. He often comes up with
ways that a certain film might work. Roger doesn't just a bash a
movie, he offers helpful ideas. In his review of "The Hills Have
Eyes," Roger is curious about a creature who communicates orders
through a walkie-talkie. He was hoping to find out more about
this creature and his motivation. Not to mention, Roger is the
king of sarcasm. Anybody can bash a bad movie. Sometimes certain
films are just asking to get a verbal beat-down. Roger doesn't
use cheap shots or low blows in his reviews. He just states the
obvious in a creative and ingenious way. As we all know, nothing
is funnier then people missing the point. It's amazing how many
filmmakers and actors often miss the point with their movies.
After reading Roger's book, it made me want to re-watch some of
these stinkers. It's amazing that Roger can remember everything
that he remembers in his reviews. He goes into great detail
about scenes that I had long forgotten about. You can tell he
truly pays attention to every movie that he watches. While most
of us are snoozing during a bad movie, Roger is coming up with
ways to pick apart bad scenes. You'll find yourself laughing out
loud while reading Roger's classic reviews of some truly
dreadful films. The way Roger describes a scene in "Freddy Got
Fingered" is truly magical. The book features over 200 bad movie
reviews. The book also features all of the titles in
alphabetical order. I'm sure you'll have some fond memories
while reading about some of these movies. I know I felt stupid
after reading Roger's review of "Wolf Creek" in this book. Roger
had this to say about the film: "The theaters are crowded right
now with wonderful, thrilling, funny, warm-hearted, dramatic,
artistic, inspiring, entertaining movies. If anyone you know
says this is the one they want to see, my advice is: Don't know
that person no more."
Unfortunately, I suggested to a friend that we check out "Wolf
Creek" over the holiday weekend back in 2005. I was looking for
a fun night out with a bad movie. Needless to say, nobody had
fun after seeing "Wolf Creek."

In the end, this
book is a must-own for movie fans. It's funny,
insightful, entertaining, and a lot of fun. It only
took me four days to finish this book. The book was
truly a blast to read. There's nothing I love more
than a bad movie getting an entertaining review.
Needless to say, nobody does it better than Roger.
With that said, this book made me realize how much I
truly miss watching Ebert every Saturday on Ebert
and Roeper. The show is truly not the same without
him. Roger adds something to the show that cannot be
replaced. How does Roger do it after all these
years? He still lights up as much anyone after
seeing a great movie. Roger has never lost his
enthusiasm for the cinema. Even in this book, you
can see his love of the cinema. You can tell Roger
is smiling with us as he has a field day with
certain films. Most of all, Roger is a fantastic
writer. He just makes it look so easy. The good
writers can do that. I think you'll enjoy your time
spent with Roger in this book. This book comes
HIGHLY recommended from yours truly. |
We miss you, Roger.
