JUST LIKE HEAVEN

Remaking a film that’s not even twenty years old? It seems to have happened with “Just Like Heaven” which is a more light-hearted not so soapy remake of “Ghost.” Or perhaps this is a remake of “Ghost Dad.” Or maybe the former was a remake of “Ghost.” I couldn’t really tell you, honestly. And god is it ever realistic. Our medical intern Witherspoon is up all hours without messy hair or dark circles, I buy that, and she never seems too tired, I buy that. Meanwhile, with constant montages, the studios once again attempt to push Ms. Witherspoon, a semi-talented actress, on us as the next “American Sweetheart,” as if Julia Roberts wasn’t enough to endure. God help us.

But, the script just doesn’t take the same “risks” the former titles do, and that’s a damn shame. But it’s not completely unexpected. “Just Like Heaven” is typical Hollywood money grabbing malarkey. Instead, our main character Elizabeth is not dead, per se, she’s under a coma. And yet she’s haunting someone. Ay dios. And, yes, it’s coming… Mark Ruffalo begins to fall for this ghostly chick after she starts haunting his apartment that was once hers!

God, I love Hollywood! Mark Ruffalo reverts back to “interchangeable love interest” mode as David, the patsy who sublets an apartment and begins getting haunted by the blonde poltergeist, and there’s never a sense of the supernatural beyond the basic plot catalyst that she’s a ghost. Okay, she appears in her fashionable clothing, even though she’d logically be in a hospital gown since she’s technically in a deep coma, and we’re not supposed to question this? It’s like “Just Like Heaven” was built to be torn down, and yes, it’s a chick flick, but chick flicks can be good. Ever seen “Barefoot in the Park”?

In the film “The Player,” there were writers attempting to keep their film from becoming typical Hollywood dreck, and in the name of money, and perhaps manipulation, it’s just what was made. “Just Like Heaven” is the example of that film’s constant satire. Pat Hollywood ending, typical big cast, a predictable storyline, a romance void of any tragedy, and a typical resolution only fiction can accomplish. He’s subletting her apartment, why? Who knows. Perhaps her family is doing it to help pay for her medical bills. Notice how I make this up to add some sense of humanity to this piece of crap? Yes, it’s that pathetic. “Just Like Heaven” is just that kind of movie. Disingenuous, artificial, and pure trash.

Hollywood processed crap like this really steams me up, because it's an unoriginal, and insulting piece of romance comedy garbage that's so mediocre and pointless, it's almost insulting.
