The first, “Decomposed,” attempts a serious tale of someone losing a loved one and then coming to terms with it. The problem being, half of the piece is over-narration, and the rest has choppy sound, bad cuts, poor music cutting, and in general many very obvious continuity errors. Not the “Oh, that’s funny!” kind. The “Oh, there’s lighting in a totally dark area when the lights from the car are off.” kind. Two People in a Car is typical of a first-time college project film, I’ve seen a bunch of them. Strange, archtypically random things happen between two people talking for the sake of absurdism. It can be done brilliantly, and it can be done in an arbitrary way that makes you care nothing for the characters involved. This is the latter. Characters turning to murder over half-hearted statements that annoy the other, cheap Tommy TuTone gimmicks, and a relationship that starts because two people say hello. Finally, there’s a mockumentary of an emo/punk fusion band, which picks off of some great traditions, but fails to take the best elements. For instance, in order for delusional arrogant characters to be funny, they must have more passion. Good music is also typically requisite even if it’s poking fun at a genre. In the end, it smacks of some buddies who got together and made a film. Okay. Cool. Good for you guys, but in the end, if you’re going to go public, it has to have some substance of worth or some real laugh moments.
