THE PLIGHT OF THE ANGELENOS

Famine, depression, homelessness, poverty, that’s nothing compared to the hardships people in Los Angeles have to go through to entertain us day in and day out. What about the studio executives? What about actors? Who will worry about them? They have it harder than people in third world countries, don’t they? Don’t they? “The Plight of the Angelenos” is a biting satire of a world that places entertainment over important issues like famine and poverty. Created entirely with the advent of stock public domain footage, “Plight of the Angelenos” is an exaggerated spoof of the world of Los Angeles where actors are trained in “boot camps” and where actors mysteriously have longer shelf lives than actresses. Also chronicled is the rise in popularity of the ever dreaded reality show which director Barredo hilariously spoofs with a deadpan narration followed by fifties home videos with word bubbles.

“The Plight of the Angelenos” is a vicious spoof of American priorities and our vapid fascination with Hollywood over true world issues which is juxtaposed with sad film clips of children struggling for food in villages. The sad fact about this film, though, is that it’s more down to reality than anything else. Most often people do care about Hollywood and filmmaking than they really care about the real world. “Imagine a world without Entertainment” Barredo analyzes with a stern deadpan dread that makes this a hoot. Not to mention much of the stock footage used during the film is very funny from “The Three Stooges”, right down to kitschy fifties film clips.

Barredo's film is a creative and sharp spoof of the world of entertainment based around stock footage, and with hilarious narration, "Plight" really hits its target.
