REBEL STUDZ: THE UNCENSORED DOCUMENTARY

I wanted to like “Rebel Studz.” It has a great concept and with a tighter script it could be a funny spin off of the whole “Spinal Tap” gamut, but in the end I wasn’t crazy about it. After the ten minute run time, and the jokes that flung at the screen almost a mile a minute I was pretty lethargic toward the experience. It was flat, and mainly because the jokes manage to miss their mark.

I could never really understand what the concept was for this group and what direction they were being taken in and Claveria never makes it completely clear. Were they a wonderful band who became too big for their own good, or an awful band praised by a bunch of morons? I wasn’t really clear, and damned if I wanted to find out. Meanwhile this follows the same formula of Claveria’s previous film “The Erotic Samurai.”

Little known figure, gains cult status, a dubious legacy, interviews with professionals and people who knew them, witnesses to their fame, people who hated them and curse their existence, embarrassing footage during their downfall, a rabid fan base, and of course the retrospective with candid footage of the figures in their setting. I saw all of this in “The Erotic Samurai” and to a greater effect. “Rebel Studz” is a great concept with a lot of promise, but sadly that doesn’t translate on the screen.

With a better set-up and script, “Rebel Studz” can be funny, but the ten minute short just didn’t click with me. The jokes just didn't cut it, and the formula has been done with a better punch in Claveria’s past films.
