British
comedy is notorious for esoteric jokes, loud obnoxious characters and
almost mundane situations skewed by outlandish scenarios. Many English
shows have translated well over in America, but for every “Monty
Python’s Flying Circus,” “Absolutely Fabulous” and “The Young Ones”
there are untold shows that are known and appreciated by a small fringe
group.

RISING DAMP is one of these shows. Unknown to
many devoted UK comedy junkies, RISING DAMP follows the
adventures of Rupert Rigsby (Leonard Rossiter) the slovenly
racist and manic landlord of a run down boarding house and
those tenants that are unfortunate enough to live there. As
with many English comedy shows, the series finds its rhythm
as the episodes progress and by the time we’ve reached
Series 3, or Season 3 as it would be known to American
audiences, the show has found its groove and the endless
putdowns flow like heavily fluoridated English tap water. |

The show is often laugh out loud funny, and the now
mild innuendos and situations seem tame to today’s audiences but were no
doubt edgy in the 70’s. New viewers may tend to get lost in the
culture-centric jokes but the flow of humor is easy enough to follow.
English comedy is an odd beast with the jokes consisting of equal parts
dry, refined dead-pan humor and loud, brash mayhem. RISING DAMP offers
both of these comedic hemispheres and any fan of the more popular
examples of Brit Comedy will no doubt enjoy this collection.
This release offers all seven 25 minute episodes of
1977’s Series Three on one single sided disc. No extra audio or
subtitle options are offered, and disc extras include cast filmographies
and production notes.
This release of Series Three is actually a great place for new viewers
to start experiencing RISING DAMP as the show really is at the top of
its form here, more so than the last two seasons. I would definitely
recommend this for fans of British comedy who may be looking for
something new to discover or for something a little off the beaten path
from the more well known and exhausted shows that have been airing on
American shores for a very long time.
