The two main
actors, Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott, and their two younger co-horts,
Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Bobb'e J. Thompson, just completely rule
this show. There are so many funny bits in this film, funny moments,
pure hysterics, that it was just a fun movie going experience. Being
from the fandom of The State, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, and
everything else that group has worked on, this was a very welcome
surprise as it seemed like it had the potential to be another version of
the coming of age flick but instead just owned it.
Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott work as pitch-man and model for an
energy drink called Minotaur. Rudd hates his job, Scott loves it. And
he's something of a partier/ladies man. Rudd hates the world and Scott
loves everything about it. But their chemistry come together within the
first two minutes of the film, when Scott gets out of a car and tells
Rudd to guess what he did last night, and then proceeds to put his
fingers under Rudd's nose. Hilarious.

This is one of those funny
movies where the commercials don't do it much justice. You
watch the TV commercials and you expect this to be just
another film like Superbad or Pineapple Express, and where
it does have similar notions, this is a movie directed by
David Wain of Stella fame. So there is a lot of the
completely ridiculous humor there. There is a lot of stupid.
There is a lot of nonsense. There is a green pee joke.
There's a lot of Ben Affleck cracks. They even pull Kiss
into the mix and make them out to be the ultimate rock band. |

And it works.
As to be expected from a movie starring Rudd, there are a series of
lower-tier actors that get some play here, a lot of them you've seen
elsewhere. Ken Marino shows up as the dickish boyfriend of Christopher
Mintz-Plasse's mom, played by Kerri Kenney-Silver (Marino plays one of
the two demons helping out the main characters on Reaper and Kerri plays
Trudi Weigle on Reno 911). Ken Jeong, Matt Walsh, and Joe Lo Truglio
show up in the Cosplay antics that are a large portion of the film, and
Ken has been in Knocked Up and Pineapple Express (he was the psychotic
doc in Knocked Up and the head of the Chinese mafia goons in Express),
Matt Walsh is from the greatest television show of all-time (Upright
Citizens Brigade) and Joe Lo Truglio has been in all the State/Stella
stuff (he was in Superbad as the idiot that gave the two main actors a
ride and got in a fistfight at the party). Jane Lynch plays a large
part, and you've seen any of the Christopher Guest movies, or most of
Apatow's films, you know her. Same with Elizabeth Banks.
But the best thing about this movie is the jokes. It is a series of
jokes. It is a series of just comedic parts that flow together. There is
a pretty great pig in a blanket joke, lots of boob references, and just
sheer insanity. And that is the best part. Yes they sometimes seemed
slightly strung together, but in a film co-written by Paul Rudd, you
expect that. And the jokes work. Some of the touching human stuff works.
But it never feels schmaltzy.
Go see this instead of some terribly produced film about animated
animals escaping to Africa or Kevin Smith's newest opus. Go watch this
movie and be prepared to laugh. The jokes keep coming, so you might need
to see it twice. Also, look out for some of the small cameos from people
like Louis CK and David Wain himself and just enjoy this film. They
don't come around that often.
